When the majority of people hear the words “teen drivers,” many things come to mind: many of which are not good. I’m sure most people would think of car accidents, recklessness, and possibly driver’s education or the lack thereof. More drivers education for teens is controversial because of three main topics: safety for teen and adult drivers, car accidents among teens, and special regulations against new drivers with siblings. Getting a driver’s license is a very exciting moment for teens and a very nervous one for their parents. There are two parts to new teen driving: the thrill of driving on your own and returning home safely. Sam Williams, a senior at Winchester Community High School, agrees with the fact that common sense is one of the key components to being a safe driver. Sam also considers herself to be a safe driver, even though she is a teenager, which are all put in the category of “bad drivers” (Question 1). “I stay safe while driving by not turning my music up too loud so I can focus on the road. If I’m trying to pull out into a busy highway (i.e. from a restaurant off McGalliard onto McGalliard). Sometimes I’ll even turn my music off so I can fully concentrate on what I’m doing. I respect the traffic laws, and I never drive when I’m tired. I also never drive when I’m angry or sad because I know my emotions could cause me to lose focus” (Sam, Question 4). It is possible to be a safe teen driver because Sam explains what she does to stay safe on the roads. She also explained during the interview that it took her six months to complete her driver’s education course (Question 2).
