In today’s day and age, steroids have plagued the reputation of many sports. It was first presented in Russia and sparked a new era of bigger athletes with no seeming end. Steroids have gotten its way into every sport with usage high school athletes all the way to the pros. Even though there are many effects to the users health, steroid use is through the roof. Because our athletes are bigger and stronger than they were 60 years ago, they feel the need to be the biggest and do not care if there life is on the line. From Lance Armstrong to Alex Rodriquez, also known as A-Roid, our greats have cheated their way to greatness. Although our government has pushed for several laws to cut down from steroid use, they have little to no use. It has been a huge issue in the world of sports and is now getting the attention and recognition it deserves in the media. Steroid use by athletes of all ages are tarnishing their reputation and destroying their lives, and a solution is needed.
Testosterone is a naturally occurring hormone in our bodies. Anabolic or androgenic steroids are synthetic variants of testosterone (James 7). Testosterone is good for your body when produced at normal levels. In males, it helps promote protein-building, production of sperm. It also has metabolic effects on muscle, bone, and skin (Goldman 72). Anabolic steroid’s main purpose isn’t to gain muscle they are used as medicine. They help with types of anemia, a few types of breast cancers, endometriosis, osteoporosis, and hereditary angioedema (NIDA 2). But anabolic steroids are often taken at 10 to 100 times the natural levels by athletes looking to be their best (Yesalis xxv).

Steroids appeared to be a perfect fit since the typical football player is big, strong, fast, and mean. This was a turning point for football; it would never again be the same. Eventually, many of the athletes the teens were using anabolic steroids to get bigger, faster, and more aggressive. Steroids were a common thing in the NFL after a couple years.
Steroids not only increase strength, they also increase speed and endurance. They have been detected in track, wrestling, swimming, and most recently baseball. Many competitors have had medals stripped from them such as Canadian Sprinter Ben Johnson. His urine was tested positive for steroids after he won gold in 1988 (Silverstein 7). This event exposed the consequences of steroids in sports all around the world.
