Sex education: At home, at school or both? 1.06 million is the number of abortions took place in the U.S in 2011 according to Guttmacher Institute. This is not a small number in compare to the whole population of the world. 1.06 million abortions equals to more than 1.06 million babies have been killed before they even have full bodies. That’s a very sad statistic to look at. And what is the main reason why this sad number exists? We could blame poor education in sex for this controversy issue. Lack of knowledge about sex and how to have safe sex could lead to pregnancy and the outburst of sexual transmitted diseases. In the past, sex was something that people tried to avoid talking about it, neither less teaching. Sex became a mystery, and a mystery would always trigger people’s nerves, especially teenager’s curious minds. That leads teenager at that time, who had no idea about sex, wanted to have sex to know about it. And when they had sex without any protection, they easily got STDs or HIV or even pregnancy. The case awakens society that sex education must be taught for students at the very first when they enter middle schools. But the way sex was taught those days was very much different from today. A class usually last for only one hour. It’s not enough time for someone to remember or understand an aspect thoroughly. When talking with parents about sex, students not only feeling more comfortable but also have unlimited time to discuss, unlike in class. Thirdly, sex education at home would avoid “class” prejudiced. The people who are being given sexual education are teenagers and they have a stereotype about the word “class”. They normally think class is the mixture of boring lecture and monotone voice so they would not pay attention. The “talk” about sex has never been a topic many like to discuss with tweens or teens, but it has to be addressed sometime during their lifetimes. Sex is a natural experience that is used for reproduction and the building of an emotional connection. However, many teens engage in pre-marital sex and have no knowledge about protecting themselves. Sex education teaches about human sexuality and how abstinence should be practiced to prevent sexual transmitted diseases (STDs) and unplanned pregnancies. Yet, sex education classes are mostly for those in college. Sex education is not meant to encourage sex, but hopefully steer students into having safe sex or no sex at all. Becoming aware about the consequences of having sex among the tween and teen community needs to be established and understood. If parents have a hard time giving the “talk” about sex, then the subject should be discussed with a trained individual instead of being avoided. Without knowledge teens will explore things without caution. Sources indicate that the argument to allow sex education within public schools, such as middle or high schools, is whether the benefits of learning about sex at an early age will outweigh the risks of experiencing sex without advanced knowledge.
In today’s society major issues are established on teen pregnancy and STDs. Many parents are against the abstinence only education program being taught to their children and others believe in teaching there parents that sex is bad. On the other hand sex education tells students what and what will happen if they have sex they will tell them how it happens, what the effects are after it happens, and how to prevent from getting pregnant or STDs. There are also parents that are very against both, the abstinence based Ed and the sex education courses in schools not everybody wants their children to be taught about sex. The course is usually begin during middle school and kind of fade away in high school, but in the middle there are issues within the teachers and the curriculum that they would have to teach.
Schools are very instrumental for the development of the child. Modern parents are so busy to an extent they do not have time to spend with their children. The economy alone cannot allow them, even if they really want, to have a special time with their children. That being the case, the parents do not have time to share pertinent intimate information of sexuality with their children. Therefore, there comes a need to have someone else who can do that work in a very reliable manner and impartially. You find that schools or rather instructors spent most of the time with the children and thus forms a central part of the children’s lives. Mandating them with the obligation of taking care of the overall development of the children is not an option. The overall development of the children here includes sex education. As any other education helps the child develop, this too should be added in the list. Considering how these children’s parents are tied up by very busy schedules, the teachers are the only solution into this problem and this confirms why sex education continues to be taught in schools.
This education should start early for children before they reach puberty age, and before they make wrong actions. There are classes for every subject you can imagine ranging from simple subjects to farfetched theories. However, some people refuse to recognize the need for one class and that is sexual health education. I absolutely believe sexual health education is needed to better the quality of life for students today. While these classes should not encourage teens to participate in sexual acts, they should be accurate and state only facts about sex. Currently, a nationwide national curriculum is nonexistent, but federal money is being used to fund abstinence only programs (Mackler). Comprehensive sexual health classes delay sexual activity, reduce teen pregnancy, and lower the number of teens infected with sexually transmitted diseases.

This provides a chance for adolescents to engage in interactive discussion with each other. Some of their peers may ask questions that others are afraid to ask or questions that may have not been brought to their attention. For example, inside a classroom many adolescents are taunted because they do not know a particular slang term for sex such as “smash” or “knocking boots.” Interactive discussions among their peers provide a sense of comfort and universality. I believe that schools should teach sexual education. I think this because kids that are in school during this age do know or respect the dangers of being sexual active. They don 't know what it means to be protected, They will know about their own bodies and that of other genders. I believe they will have a new found respect for themselves and others.
