Bodybuilding is a sport that tests both the body and the mind. For thousands of years, people have used it. However, only for a little over a century has it been popular. A big question asked by many in the sport is, how much has bodybuilding really changed from the silver era (the 1940s)? The answer is a lot, since the 1940s many changes have occurred. Some of these are steroid abuse, competition categories and ranks, and money (Robson). Modern-day bodybuilders have incredibly large “stacks” (slang for the steroids they use on their cycle), more opportunities to compete than they did in the 40s and even more ways to market for money. To start modern day bodybuilders, such as Ronnie Coleman, Rich Piana Kai Greene, Jay Cutler, and even Mr. Olympia Phil Heath are abusing steroids. A study taken showed that 18.8% of modern-day bodybuilders abuse anabolic steroids (Gholamreza). Modern day bodybuilders also have many different competition categories including Physique, Classic Physique, Bodybuilding, Women’s Physique, and Women’s Classic Physique. There are also many different ranking of competitions such as Amateur leagues, National, and Mr. Olympia. Modern-day bodybuilders also have an advantage in marketing. Bodybuilders like Jeremy Buendia have sponsors like evogen or whey protein. Those companies then put the bodybuilders on their labels and in commercials. They get paid to be in their commercials and it helps them become more known around the world. In the 1940s there were bodybuilders such as John Grimek and Steve Reeves who had little access to steroids, had very few competitions, and had a hard time making a living off bodybuilding. Now there are bodybuilders like Kai Greene, Jeremy Buendia, Calum Von Moger, Phil Heath, and Rich Piana (whom is now dead) who have easy access to steroids, have many competitions, and have a much easier time making a living through bodybuilding. As we can see bodybuilding is a lot different and easier than it was in the 40s. Now, even though it has changed a lot. Bodybuilding is very important to a lot of people, including myself.
