In zoos 40% of lion cubs die before one month of age, only 30% die before the age of 6 months in the wild, this is due to factors absent in zoos, such as predation. Keeping animals in zoos at the reach of humans is bad for both the animals and our safety. In the case of Harambe an innocent animal died because of his natural behaviors, but a child was on the other end. Zoos are harmful because animals are being kept in unnatural environment, they are getting abused, and their mental health is at risk.
Some may not notice, but animals in zoos are in very small uncomfortable places/habitats. For example lions use 100 square miles in the wild, but in zoos they are often left with only 240 square feet. This does not give lions their space to wonder. Also, many animals live in packs or herds, but zoos do not give the animals this opportunity. Social animals need other animals for their happiness. Antidepressants are pills that people with extreme depression take to make them less depressed. Most likely they are taking these pills because they are placed in cages without any friends in them. Most zoo animals show stress signals. These signals include repetitive movement, head bobbing, walking in circles, rocking back and forth, over grooming, bar chewing, and sham chewing 1. Many of these things such as bar chewing are mistaken for an animal coming up to say “hello,” but really they’re saying “help.” When in a zoo almost every animal is showing one or two stress signals, like walking in circles, this is very common.
