There is a concept, that in 5.4 billion years the Sun will develop in size and become a red giant. There is a feasible chance that it will eradicate the Earth itself. Therefore we require our current government to put currency and resources towards the issue of identifying technology adequate for interstellar travel.

The habitat that we are based on today, Earth, is imperative for the survival of humanity. This is more time consuming than interplanetary travel and also needs a higher technological level that has not yet been come across. This kind of travel may be essential for the survival of our race because in around 5.4 billion years, our Earth and all other planets in our solar system, will become too near to the Sun causing all life forms to be destroyed, due to overheating. From this information, we can conclude that we will need to spend extensive periods of time focused on interstellar travel, to travel to other stars that may have Earth-like planets in its orbit.
