The amount of students who are or are in danger of becoming homeless has increase on our country over the years. Although society structured people to attend post-secondary school in order to receive a sustained career, there are some cases where college is simply too expensive. Many homeless students are not receiving a proper education due to these circumstances, which results of them dropping out. Because of this situation, there are different methods to combat students dropping out of college due to financial issues. However, increasing taxes and/or tuition would not benefit the situation without an increase of society’s knowledge and awareness in the topic.
The main issue revolving homelessness is that people are not putting themselves into their perspective. Students who live in shelters and constantly worry about the possibility of eating that day go through a whole different kind of struggle compared to others. This kind of obstacle is not common to relate to. “She slept in libraries, bathrooms and her car. She sold plasma and skipped meals,” (2). All they know is that they are paying more money to benefit the homeless to receive an education. “By 2020, about two-thirds of all jobs will require education and training beyond high school,” (9). In order to have these homeless students succeed and be equal with the norm, society has to contribute to give them a special care and support. Although morally this may sound like the answer, it is not logical. Other students and families worked hard for their earnings and would want to invest the income into their own benefits.
