Receiving a new heart is very beneficial. When you receive your new heart you are now a recipient. The donor must be pronounced brain dead to donate their heart. You will be able to live your life as a normal, healthy person again. Heart transplants are usually performed when the heart is diseased or failing, but not everyone will be able to endure the operation. Although it is very beneficial, not everyone will survive the transplant. Many risks come with the benefit. You will be moved into Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and closely monitored. The risks of a heart transplant include rejecting the new organ, bleeding during or after surgery, and blood clots that can cause a heart attack, stroke, or lung problems. In order to be suitable for a heart transplant, you must not have any other medical conditions that could reduce your life expectancy, you have a low chance of living without the new organ, or you have end stage heart disease. If you undergo the operation and survive the transplant, you will need to take medications for the rest of your life. The medications will stop your immune system from rejecting your donated heart. Depending on the severity of the rejection, mild rejections can be helped by receiving an injected steroid. You will receive this steroid for three days. If your rejection is not treated, severe heart damage will occur. Approximately 85 to 90% of heart transplant patients are living one year after their operation.
