Every year in the United States, an average more than 100,000 people are shot. In just the last three years, a total of 325,609 people have been killed from gun violence; if one were to think about it, that’s more fatalities than the population of Pittsburgh (307,484.) There have been shootings in schools/universities, shopping centers, and even a gym that have gone to show that no one is safe, no matter their surroundings. Gun violence just doesn’t effect one, it affects many. There are so many questions as to why things like this are happening, but many just want all of the violence to refrain. Gun violence is a huge problem because of the things that are possibly causing it to occur. Violence like this isn’t just affect the family/families involved, but it affects the community as one. It affects the children of the community the most. For children, being exposed to gun violence it can lead to a deep impact: aggression, insomnia, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress (The Impact.) Something like this would cause children to stay inside more; they would be too scared to go outside and play. Gun violence is a problem because it’s killing our population. It’s a problem because young children and adults lives are taken before they can even experience “life.” It’s a problem because it’s killing innocent people, not just people who are guilty of something. It’s a problem because more Americans now die from guns rather than cars. It’s a problem because people take advantage of the Second Amendment and their rights. It’s a problem because it’s the second-leading cause of death for ages 1-19 in the U.S. It’s a problem because it’s slowly escalating into something revolting that hasn’t even happened yet. I propose that one law could include police officers to confiscate more assault rifles. In past shootings there have been guns that shouldn’t be used by civilians; these guns should be in the hands of someone who knows how to handle them. In the Colorado movie theater shooting the shooter had used and AK-47. A gun like that should be used by a soldier, and only a soldier. Guns with this kind of power are illegal for imports, and that should be a reason for people not to use them, but how are they getting into the country? Obama has the power to make the Gun Control Act of 1968 stronger so the police can confiscate the ones found, but what’s stopping him? To reiterate, another law that could be passed would be to tighten background checks.
