For years there have been an excessive number of children in and out of the foster system. Quite a few children have succeeded; however, other children have not. A few children have looked to drugs, alcohol and violence to cope with what they have gone through and/or what they are currently going through. A number of those children ended up in a juvenile detention center or prison for breaking the law. Foster parents are desperately needed to help these children succeed in life and make it through this terrible time. Although most children can make their own decisions and choose the righter path, children’s lives can be changed by just one mistake of their parents. To become a foster parent, the person must be at least twenty-one years of age, legal in the U.S., and a resident of the state that they will be fostering in. The person must be an apartment dweller, renter or home-owner. The potential foster parent and all adults residing in the home must be able to pass a fingerprint-based criminal history records check, “if you or any adult living in your home has been convicted of certain criminal offenses, you cannot become a foster/adoptive parent” (“Am I Ready for Foster or Adoptive Parenting?”). As long as the person meets those requirements then the “people interested in becoming foster parents will be able to select a foster home licensing agency that will assist them in completing their family home study and inspection, foster parent training and explain the other requirements” (“Steps for Becoming a Foster Parent”). The person looking to foster must be C.P.R. and first aid certified before their foster license can be approved. The potential foster parent must be in good health; the person’s doctor will need to fill out a form that is provided by the fostering agency stating this. There is a lot of paperwork that he/she will need to complete and provide back to the fostering agency that goes into details of personal and family history.
