Bad Drivers. Bad Drivers EVERYWHERE!
Have you ever been cut off? Almost crashed into? Or even worse, have you encountered a rolling roadblock that makes a little part of you die inside? Unfortunately, it isn’t uncommon for most people to wonder how on earth the person next to or in front of them has their license. I routinely find myself saying “what the hell” and many, many more expletives that are probably better not repeated.
There are many little things that play a huge role in if you’re a good or bad driver. Bad drivers, for instance, do not use their blinkers. A simple flick of a finger can prevent a crash or inconveniences to other drivers; however, for reasons far more perplexing than

If someone is driving a 1972 Ford Pinto with balding tires, they should definitely be driving slower than the rest of traffic and in the right hand lane. A Pinto is a car that can get you from point A to point B, but the capabilities of a Pinto will not safely allow you to go 90 miles per hour on a highway in the rain. In contrast, a 2007 Infiniti G35 Sport could easily and safely drive at or above 100 miles per hour, while hardly pressing down the gas pedal. Many misinformed individuals mistake speeding tickets for a way to determine if an individual is a good or bad driver. It does not make you a bad driver just because you exceed the posted speed limit. There is a huge difference between exceeding the posted speed limit, and exceeding your car’s ability, your skill, and the safe speed relative to the conditions surrounding the driver in question. I in no way, shape, or form condone driving 40 miles per hour in a neighborhood full of children playing, who may or may not at any moment dart out into the street to chase after a ball. The conditions surrounding that situation justify a slow speed, possibly even below the speed limit. However, I do believe that one should be able to drive 80 to 90 miles per hour on the highway, when the conditions are safe to do so. My lovely, intelligent, thoughtful neighbor loves to drive down my neighborhood street, which is a curvy road that’s on a hill, while putting on lipstick, talking or texting on the phone, and has even had the nerve to paint her nails. Yes, she was painting her nails while driving down the middle of the road straight at me. I joke with my dad that if I had been driving my old Lincoln LS, I would have let her hit me to maybe get her attention that painting her nails while driving was not something she should be doing. However, it’s not very funny that this woman has single handedly almost hit every member of my family multiple times except for my younger brother, who has not yet had the privilege of sharing the road with this incredibly smart, skilled driver. In his article,“Driving While Stupid”, David Barry expresses his opinions toward the drivers in Miami, and in different countries as well. Even though he has met bad drivers throughout his life, he strongly believed that Miami drivers are the worst drivers because of the way the drive. David Barry describes all the bad drivers he has seen to prove his point that drivers in Miami are still the worst drivers.
Drivers who speed often do not realize the enormous danger they are creating. When someone is speeding they have a higher braking time and are often going too fast to notice all of their surroundings, and fail to take all of the safety precautions a driver should use. Road conditions play a large role in the effects of speeding. Choosing to speed can also get a person’s license taken away, cost a fortune, or both.
Speed limits are very important throughout the world. Mainly because it involves the safety of yourself and other drivers on the road. Most people feel as if speeding is okay if you are driving correctly without any distractions. Well that is not the case at all, if you are sure of your driving and doing more than the speed limit it is a possibility that it can be another person at fault for the cause of an accident. Should highway speed limits be increased? Should we strike down every sign that the government posts and uses to regulate the speed limit on the thousands of highways around the country? Should we trust the driving ability of each and every person to drive within a reasonably safe speed? The response that most people lean toward is one of negativity. People automatically assume that the speeds presently posted on our highways are there only for our own protection.
Today’s society appears to be constantly on the go. People seem to be pulled in multiple directions at once. Individuals never appear to have enough time to complete tasks that continually accumulate. It can be difficult to criticize someone that tries to make the most out every minute. Unfortunately, some of today’s drivers show a lack of judgment and trying to perform other tasks, while behind the wheel. People may feel this is best use time while getting to a destination. Occasionally, the small amount of time that people are trying to gain results in a time consuming accident. With modern conveniences that are geared toward an on the go public, individuals appear to be too preoccupied to driving safely.
“Have you ever noticed how anyone going slower than you is an idiot, and everyone going faster than you is a maniac?” George Carlin once, jokingly asked. However, this is not the case for drivers on the famous highway systems in Germany. When you drive in Germany you can be“idiot” in the government’s eyes if you go too slowly, drive in the wrong lane or impede the flow of traffic. This distinction is not unique in Germany but is applicable on their federal highway system, aptly named the Autobahn. Rules regarding how anyone driving on the autobahn state that a driver must go a certain speed, or that driver becomes a public safety hazard, much like that of speeders in America. Many foreigners only hear how the autobahn has no speed limit and that is not necessarily true. There are in fact many areas that are speed limited and strictly enforced by the polizei and speed cameras integrated into the guard rail or surroundings. German drivers receive up to two years of very expensive and intensive training before driving within the country. In my opinion, I believe there should be an Autobahn-like system in America because it teaches future generations not only maturity, but also discipline and responsibility.
Some would say that speed limits are not adequate, or certain laws should be changed. Reports have shown that the majority of Americans have no problem with speed limits or the laws; new drivers are not helping either. There are key things that are liable for joining or causing road rage. For example; loud music, honking the horn, tailgating, and changing lanes without signaling all have been known to increase tension while driving. The actual causes can be traced back to different forms of stress. Such as being called into the boss' office for discussion of work performance, making bad grades in school, or having just been dumped by your girlfriend/boyfriend. The major cause of aggressive driving is the discourteous or inattentive driver. Driving behaviors include changing lanes to closely, tailgating and "the number one cause is the left lane hog." (Larson 1) These seemingly small errors infuriate the potentially aggressive driver and cause a transformation indescribable to man kind. Reduced law enforcement, highway traffic, the growing congestion is cities, and personal issues play a large role in the disposition of the aggressive driver. Then the angry driver may demonstrate his or her displeasure by speeding around the other vehicle, cutting the other car off, and or with a number of verbal and non-verbal messages. Though the driver may feel justified in his or her action, but the display in most times is very dangerous and often will result in damage to one or both cars involved.
First of all it is obvious that a motorist driving over the speed limit has more chances of getting into an accident that a motorist who is traveling at the average speed. One who drives fast does not have proper and that well of a control on the vehicle as one that is moving at a safe speed or at the speed limit mark. It is true that traveling above the speed limit will save time and time is money but is it really worth it. Speed over the limit is a major factor in about two to five percent of fatalities. When driving over the limit it is hard to determine the other drivers speed, this is called the speed variance and this can cause an accident while overtaking the other vehicle or simply changing lanes because the other driver could be speeding up as well, at the same time as you are changing lanes that would result in an accident.
Imagine driving on I-75 as cars race by you at a blink of an eye. You are driving 60 miles per hour, the speed limit; they must be doing 100 miles per hour or more. This is not an illusion; this is the reality of driving on a highway. Believe it, it happens everyday. Cars race down the road at uncontrollable speeds that cause tickets, accidents, and sadly death. Speed limits are a must for traffic control, for safety in neighborhoods and for avoidance of collisions.

The number of accidents over the last ten years have drastically increased, drivers are paying less attention to the road itself. Many individuals behind the wheel of a car believe that their driving does not affect the road conditions, however it always will. The driving habits of today are catastrophic due to the reasoning that the driving will affect other lives through reckless or distracted driving, and disobeying traffic laws.
