This fundamental idea is debated by many. Foremost, these cars are supposed to be better for the environment, as they release fewer greenhouse gasses over the whole life of the vehicle. An electric car releases less CO2 into the environment in day to day use. In comparison, during the total life span of a combustion engine car, half of the greenhouse gasses are released during the manufacturing of the car (EPA). Therefore, electric cars have created a noxious amount of greenhouse gasses before they are ever driven. Next, while these cars may not release CO2 when they are driven, the electricity that they use had to come from somewhere. In the United States, most electricity produced is from coal power (EPA).
