Smoking cessation programs have been prevalent and quite effective in increasing success rates among smokers over the last few decades. Alternatives to aid in the cessation of cigarette smoking include: nicotine patches, gum, nasal spray and prescription non- nicotine medications. E-cigarettes have been growing in popularity over the past decade and its use has been highly included in smoking cessation programs as an alternative method for smokers. E-cigarettes (Electronic cigarettes) are electronic devices that aerosolize nicotine without combustion. E-liquid solution usually contains nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerin and added flavors. Increasing advertising of e-cigarettes as a safer alternative can be misleading for smokers who are trying to quit. It is crucial to be aware of the implications of a product that is supposed to be effective in helping smokers quit. Widespread advertising of e-cigarettes can target vulnerable groups like the younger populations causing poor health outcomes. Regulation and legislation on e-cigarettes should be made strict and follow similar restrictions as traditional tobacco cigarettes. By doing so, the effectiveness of e-cigarettes used by smokers trying to quit might increase. Further research is required in terms of studying the effects of the chemicals found in nicotine solutions. In addition, as a right of the consumer, it is important to know the exact amount of nicotine and other chemicals included in labelling to increase awareness among smokers to help quantify their consumption.
