Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability (Dyslexia Basics). It is not because a student doesn’t want to learn. Students with Dyslexia are still students. They can still learn and they still want to learn. Students with Dyslexia have problems with the letters in words, and the sounds letters make. The letters can be flipped upside down, turned around and rotated to the eyes of someone with Dyslexia (Dyslexie Font). This can cause students to have problems with reading, writing and even understanding text that's given to them. Each student is affected differently, some students won’t have many of these problems. It has been proven that if one parent has Dyslexia their children will have a fifty percent chance of getting Dyslexia. While if there are two parents with Dyslexia their student or students will have a one hundred percent chance of getting Dyslexia. So if one student has Dyslexia, the other students should be tested as well. Theirs might not be as severe, but Dyslexia could still be there and it could affect them later in life. Dyslexia can be different for everyone with Dyslexia. Everyone should realise that if you have two kids with Dyslexia one could be very smart at computers while the other student can’t even type, but they are very great at something else. One is called Trauma Dyslexia. Which is caused by a serious illness or a brain injury. Another is secondary dyslexia. Which is from when students had a problem with the way their brain was developing when they were a fetus. Many students and adults don’t get these, but they can happen sometimes. So teachers should be aware of these just in case one of their students has these as well. (Types of Dyslexia). Before we can expect people to alter their perceptions, they must understand what it is. Dyslexia is a learning disability linked to those who struggle with reading. Although, it seems pretty simple, dyslexia is extremely challenging to identify because it is not defined by one specific thing. Moreover, it includes a wide array of difficulties such as: trouble spelling words, reading quickly, writing out words, “sounding out words in” head, pronunciation and comprehension.
The exact cause of dyslexia is unknown. However, researchers believe dyslexia is a reading disability with underlying genetic, developmental and neurological causes (8). People with dyslexia have trouble reading despite normal or high intelligence and exposure to sufficient language instruction. Specific reading problems apparent in dyslexia include reversal of words and letters, difficulty in pronouncing new words, difficulty in making a distinction between similarities and differences in words (on for no), and difficulty in discerning differences in letter sounds (ten, tin) (2).
A child with dyslexia may not have the problem of translating letters into sound but just struggle with understanding what is being read causing schoolwork to take longer than their classmates. As the child gets older, dyslexia may cause the child to complain about reading, to have trouble remembering dates and require more time for assignments and tests. (Yale Center) When a child suffers with dyscalculia he might find it hard to get the math basics down at a young age. This is because he cannot visualize numbers as meaning something more that just a shape. Often when a new math concept is learned, it is forgotten the next day, causing low grades on tests. These children also commonly have a hard time telling time and direction. Some symptoms of dysgraphia are poor handwriting, the inability to record thoughts on paper, missing letters or using replacement words that don’t always make logical sense. Dyslexia has been a commonly known problem in the Unites States. Even though, dyslexia is a mental problem that causes disabilities in reading, most people do not know the truth about it. There have been movies where a person with dyslexia sees letters moving around, yet people with dyslexia do not have disabilities like moving letters around. The truth is that there are plenty of misconceptions. The myths going around of what dyslexia supposedly is, is not the truth. These myths are just misconceptions and the truths about dyslexia are more complex than what it seems like. Dyslexics have different learning processes and different ways of handling the problems at hand.
This is a subject and disorder near and dear to my heart. My personal experience with dyslexia, with myself and my daughter, has given me great insight into what dyslexia is, what the signs are, and how soon you can detect the potential for problems. It is not always the case that dyslexia is the sole source of reading and reading comprehension difficulties, there are other disorders that can exist at the same time, and this is important to know in order to help students improve their reading abilities. People with dyslexia are very smart people and have a normal or even may have a high IQ. “People with dyslexia have unusual “wiring.” Neurons are found in unusual places in the brain,” (Bright Solutions). The brain being different is a big part of what dyslexia is. Reading is the most difficult thing because they get letters mixed up. According to The Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity, Dyslexic children and adults struggle to read fluently, spell words correctly and learn a second language, among other challenges. But not one person has all of the same effects as other person does that is dyslexia. Just because people struggle does not mean that they do not overcome dyslexia. When you walk into a room of people look around you at everybody. Can you pick out one or two people who suffer from a learning disability? Simply by looking at me Could you tell I do. Even educators did not realize that I had dyslexia. Unfortunately, they did not see the signs. I would like to share with you, how I have endeavored obstacles throughout life and still do, to this day.
“The Extraordinary Characteristics of Dyslexia” by Jake Horner is a definition essay on what it means to be dyslexic. He incorporates his own life story to support his definition and his ideas in his essay. Dyslexia is looked upon as a disability that should be treated even though dyslexia has to do with the way your brain processes the information given to you. Horner includes two types of thinkers, spatial and linear. Spatial thinkers are the dyslexic people in the world, and linear thinkers are the non-dyslexic people in the world (Horner 493). As I read this essay, it made me reflect.
Hearing things over and over again, helps a kid remember better because they are hearing it and seeing it more. You should also use small group or individual this way the kid won't get overwhelmed when hearing all the information, they will be able to gather the information better. They should get intensity of intervention, other than getting pulled out of class once a week. Kids would also benefit with getting extra time on a test, and having a quiet place to work. Teachers have also it helpful if students record lectures during class to listen to later. They also have done studies that have proved that students with dyslexia have a better answer on their test when they give the answers verbal instead of writing them on paper. Children should listen to audiobooks while they read a book. Typing on a computer instead of writing helps students, using a rule helps a kid read in a straight line kids with dyslexia tend to lose their spot in the middle of reading. Students that have dyslexia might also feel like because they have this disability that they can't do a lot of things that other people might be able to do, or they feel that they aren't as smart as other people may be because they have dyslexia. There has been a steady increase in children that are being diagnosed and given Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) medication in the United States. Children in the United States are being over diagnosed and over medicated. One in seven boys in the United States is diagnosed with ADHD and given ADHD drugs before the age of 18. Meaning twenty percent of boys in America will be diagnosed with ADHD and a significant percentage of them have been misdiagnosed. Given drugs to treat a psychiatric condition that they do not even have.
Treatment for dyslexia is left up to the parents of the child or the adult living with the condition. Between adults and children needing treatments, many of the same kinds of treatment can take place, but also different treatments and techniques will work depending on the type. Three common types of primary dyslexia consist of dyscalculia, dyspraxia, and auditory dyslexia. Dyscalculia relates to one’s ability to perform math skills and the capability of memorizing sequences. Dyspraxia involves difficulty conducting ordinary motor skills, such as waving goodbye and tying a shoe. Not only does this condition affect one subject of a school day, but it likely troubles countless situations in a typical educational setting in one day. A child has a higher chance of having success if the proper treatment at school and at home is available. Parents of a child with dyslexia should talk to the teachers and make sure programs exist in their children’s day and that it suit’s the dyslexic needs in education. Advice given to parents of the child undergoing the evaluation is to not coach up the child, rather let them show their strengths and weaknesses on their own. Programs that help the child show their strengths and work more on their weaknesses will help the child tremendously. Parents of children with dyslexia must be aware that this can worse over a period of time if there is no action been taken. Dyslexia is a type of a disorder that can’t be cured but it can be worked on to the level where is hardly noticeable for other people. Parents must be watching child’s progress from the early years. Parents have to encourage a child to take part in activities appropriate for child’s age – this can be the best they could do for their child. I think also that the parents shouldn’t be telling the child that he or she has dyslexia as it can lower their self-esteem or even put them off trying harder to tackle this problem .
Mental disorders are rapidly becoming more common with each new generation born in the world. Currently, nearly one in two people suffer from some form of depression, anxiety, or other mental health problem at some point in their lives (Editor). With so many people suffering from their mental illnesses, steps have been taken in order to get help needed for these people but progress has been slow. In the medical world, hospitals are treating those with physical problems with more care than those with mental problems. Prescription drugs can only do so much helping the mentally ill go through their daily lives and more should be done to help those who need more than medicine to cope with their illness. Mental health should be considered just as important as physical health because of how advanced physical healing is, how the public reacts to those with mental illness, and due to the consequences that could happen if the illness is not correctly helped.
