Would a person drive a vehicle if they knew it was not safe? With modern day technology, vehicles have become much safer than they were fifty years ago. Many tests are done on the different makes and models of vehicles to make sure that they are safe before people are allowed to buy them. Purchasing a vehicle is a big decision. Research needs to be done before making the big decision of what vehicle to buy. When making that decision, would you want to buy a car if it is not the safest vehicle out there? Not everyone can purchase a truck due to different life situations. If life did not influence how a person purchased a vehicle, would that person become a proud new owner of a vehicle if it is not the safest out there? Modern day cars are …show more content…

When an inventor comes up with a new idea for a vehicle, they first draw it up and use computer models to test their theory on how their new idea will hold up in a crash. After the new vehicle idea passes the computer testing, an actual model of said vehicle is made to put through physical testing. A crash test dummy is put in to the driver seat as the vehicle has “accidents” from all angles. Different makes and models of vehicles are first crashed in to walls from all different sides to test how they hold up. As the testing continues, cars are crashed into cars and cars are crashed into trucks. There are still some vehicles that are safer than others. It is with all of this rigorous testing that it has become known that larger trucks are actually safer than passenger cars. What makes a truck safer than a car, you might ask? According to Patrick Bedard of Car and Driver, “Large vehicles usually have more crushable distance surrounding the passenger cabin, more self-cushioning. I think that a large pickup truck is safer than a passenger car due to the size alone. As mentioned above, Car and Driver stated that the spacious cab of a pickup truck keeps passengers safer. I agree with this completely. The Ford F-250 has such a larger interior that it would take a lot of force in an accident for another vehicle to reach the truck occupants. According to the website fleet.ford.com, there is 40.8 inches of head room in the front seat of the Ford pickup truck. The back seat has almost the same amount of room at 40.4 inches. Consumerreports.com, states that a small car like the Chevrolet Cruze has just five inches of head room in the front seat. Some cars like sports cars have even less space. This means that in a collision, the occupant of the car is more likely to have head trauma than those of the truck. Leg room for the Ford truck and the Chevrolet Cruze is both forty three inches. Leg room is not quite as important as head space, broken legs will heal but head injuries can be more complicated. The large truck bed of the Ford pickup truck keeps the occupants safe in the event of a rear end collision. Truck beds can be anywhere from six and a half feet to
