Mothers have many things to worry about when taking care of their children such as their cleanliness, well-being, nourishment, etc. One way a mother makes sure her child is well nourished is by breastfeeding. Breastfeeding in public is often regarded as a disrespectful or an indecent act. The reality is that it is perfectly natural, women have been breastfeeding for thousands of years and they should be able to continue to do so. A woman should be able to feed her child without being bothered or criticized.

It helps the mother just as much as it helps the baby, breastfeeding can reduce the risk of ovarian and breast cancer, heart disease, and osteoporosis, and even reduce baby girl’s lifetime risk of breast cancer by 25% (Johnson-Grass). It also helps a mother heal faster in the postpartum, helping the uterus return to pre-pregnancy size faster and lowering overall postpartum blood loss (Johnson-Grass). Nursing can even help moms return to their pre-baby weight (Johnson-Grass). It not only helps physically but financially as well, it saves up to 4 thousand dollars annually, but breastfeeding is most beneficial to the babies. Babies are at lower risk for sudden infant death syndrome, they have a higher immune system, and it helps them fight viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections (Johnson-Grass). Mothers cannot neglect to feed their babies just because someone else does not like seeing it and tells them to leave. That would be neglect, which is a form of child abuse, and neglect itself is against the law (McCall). Although women shouldn’t be ridiculed for breastfeeding there are things women can do to make everyone feel a bit more comfortable, for example using a courtesy blanket when breastfeeding out in public, which many women already do this because it is not their intention to offend anyone or make people uncomfortable they are just trying to feed their child and get on with their day.
When mothers breastfeed their babies in public, they should be allowed and be accepted without criticism. There are so many benefits of breastfeeding that not everyone is aware of, people should look at the facts and see that mother 's nurse to nurture their babies and not to disgusts anyone. Most cultures around the world think breastfeeding is natural and not sexual. It would benefit others to understand and embrace this natural way of feeding babies because it is a part of life.
