As Americans citizens, we often pledge our allegiance to the flag and our country but do we pledge out allegiance to the human race—to protect, unite, love, respect and serve our fellow citizens around the world? We all are and should conduct ourselves as global citizens because make up the human race. As a global citizen, I stand in the gap for those who have little to no basic human rights, are disease ridden, oppressed and desperate for healing and love. I advocate for the health and wellbeing of any and every one regardless of nationality, religion, ethnicity or gender. This why is I have decided to become a nurse.

Nursing can be used to fight fiercely for peoples’ lives all over the world, which is what I plan to do. With nursing, I can extend my global citizenship through my compassion for nurturing people in diverse communities and help spread the Ideal that regardless of landmark and identity, every individual is worthy of love, care, excellent healthcare, respect and confidence. Furthermore, as a nurse global citizen, I can provide medical care to people in third world countries who have been deemed poor and unworthy. Every human is worthy of feeling worthy. I can help further my nursing global citizenship by joining organizations like GEI (Global Engagement Institute) which provides medical internships around the world for prospective nursing students or nurses. One of the programs they offer is the Global Mental Health Internships in Rwanda and with an opportunity like this, I can help develop professional skills and simultaneously become integrated into an African community.
