Many people have never realized there are 3 to 4 million healthy and adoptable cats and dogs that are euthanized every year in shelters (Rescue Ink, 2013). Kill shelters all around the world have a catch and kill technique that is an easy and quick way to keep cities disease-free. Approximately 8-12 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year and approximately 5-9 million are euthanized, 60% of dogs and 70% of cats (Petfinder, 2003).

We need to come up with solutions and ways that we can start reducing animal kill shelters around the world. It all comes down to money, and overpopulation. Animal rescue workers save millions of animals in the United States with hopes that each one of them will find a home. This is not true for all animals due to mistreatment and illness that some of these animals endure. For the lucky ones that are adopted they must be healthy and friendly first. This is where funding is needed for medical care and treatment. He was rescued and taken to a no-kill shelter where he was treated for his medical problems and evaluated for behavior. Once Alfie was cleared medically and his behavior was improved he was placed for adoption. Alfie was adopted by a loving, caring family that worked with him over the years to build a trusting relationship. He was not an easy dog to train at first but with time he became one of the most loving and devoted pets a family could ask for. He lived a long healthy life and was loved.
