Animals should not require our permission to live on earth. Animals were given the right to be here long before we arrived. They have the same rights as humans do. Animal cruelty happens every twelve seconds. Animal cruelty happens all over the world. “Those convicted of animal cruelty can be imprisoned. Appropriate sentencing can also include individual or family counseling, community service. Also a prohibition owning or caring for animals.” (The humane society of the United States). “Law enforcement officers and judges recognize that cruelty to animals is one part of a complex problem. If you witness someone abusing a dog or cat, weather they are physically abusing the animal or neglecting the animal in some way, report it to local animal control. Neglecting may require an educational visit from an animal control officer. Abuse may require removal of the animal from the home. Either way, your call will guarantee a better life for the pet. The ACO’s will keep your name confidential” (Cathy M. Rosenthal). A successful outcome is more likely to occur if you are willing to give your name and, if needed, testimony. Law enforcement often is understaffed and underfunded. A case is more likely to be pursued if the person reporting gives his/her name and indicates a willingness to help in other ways. If you do give your name to law enforcement, it should be kept strictly confidential. You should always report any kind of abuse.
