Persuasive Essay Against Animal Testing

Over 100 million animals are abused in labs for research and experimentation of products such as cosmetics and medicines. Animal testing is the use of live animals for experimentation of products such as cosmetics or medicine and observation of behavior. Some of what these animals have to go through is inhaling toxic fumes, being burned, being immobilized for hours. All animals used for experimentation are deprived of their natural habitat. Even though testing is necessary for the safety of consumer products, animal testing should be illegal because it is unethical to cause animals pain and suffering, there are other alternatives to test products, and most tests made on animals fail on humans.

We are simply not alike animals in many aspects. Michael Balls, head of the European Center for the Validation of Alternative Methods, says "Many regulators feel more comfortable with animal tests— even with tests that are known to be unreliable and of questionable relevance" (qtd. in Keville). An animal's skin, hair, and eyes can react very differently than a human's. Some reactions to certain test could be the same for humans and animals due to the fact that they are both mammals but there are many differences in genes. Rabbits are used for the Draize test. Substances are dropped into a rabbit's eyes to test if it is irritating. This test is not reliable because rabbits' eyes are not like humans. Rabbits don't have tear ducts so it can not flush out a substance, also a rabbit's eye is more sensitive because it has a thinner cornea. Hannah Holmes wrote, "Measuring a mouse's behavioral traits, whether healthy food r unhealthy, is a delicate and error-prone task. Each mouse strain captures only a snippet of the human picture" (Holmes). Mice which are the most-used animals for testing, have many differences with humans. Mice have poor eyesight since they are nocturnal animals, and they are easily alarmed by light, open spaces, and sudden movements. Mice manifest anxiety and depression differently than humans do. These tests on animals simply can not be accurate because humans and animals are a different
