Now more than ever is the perfect time to join the military. The ultimate call to duty, some may say. Did you know that less than 0.5% of Americans serve their country (Chalabi)! There are various reason why a person would be willing to serve their country, they are; to be patriotic, benefits, travel, and to learn new skills/training. You may ask yourself, “why would I want to put myself in harms way?” Just because you have decided to join the Armed Forces does not mean you will see any sort of action, all depends on the job you select. To be patriotic is to express devotion or support to one’s country. A person could simply want to join the military on those principles alone. Some people choose to follow a time honored family tradition of serve members, pasted down by generation to generation. People join the Armed Services to simply feel a sense of pride and honor. The benefits in the United States Armed Forces are like none other. Full medical, dental, and vision coverage for you and your immediate family. In today's society it would cost a person upwards of $1000 dollars a month to have the same medical coverage a service member gets, and even at that it still may cost a person more. Another benefit is full college tuition paid for to a college of your selection covered under the Montgomery G.I. Bill / Post 9/11 Bill. If the service member decides to attend college prior to enlistment, the Armed Forces will pay up to $50,000 dollars towards your student loans, therefore making college completely free! Last but not least, another benefit is having SGLI also known to civilians as “life insurance.” This policy will cover the service member up to $400,000 dollars in life insurance coverage if something was to happen to them
