Introduction of personalized learning
Personalized learning is an academic term that refers to learning objectives, approaches, content, and tools are tailored and optimized for each learner. Unlike traditional education model that emphases on memorization, tests, class activities are teacher-directed, personalized learning model emphases on meeting students’ personal goals or interests and learning through natural activities. The goal of education is not only about teaching students as much as possible, but how well these students can absorb it, and if what they have learned in class can benefit their future careers, serve social needs, etc. It is common to hear people say, “in your workplace, things do not work the way that your books told you.” Feldstein and Hill’s article (p.25, 2016) also revealed that there are many other situations in which teachers do not connect with individual students and/or meet the students’ specific needs. Once the teaching objectives, methods do not serve students’ personal needs, they would be less motivated to collaborate in group activities and learn new things in the class. The goal of personalized learning is not teaching students why we choose A instead of B or getting a high score in each test, but giving them space to self-learning and promote critical thinking. Using digital products can help instructors better understand their students’ performance and where he/she should improve at the following study sessions.
Feldstein and Hill (p.26, 2016) has a similar view with Johnsen’s article that personalized learning strategies often try to move as much broadcast out of class time as possible in order to make room for more conversation. Since personalized learning model promotes critical thinking and problem-solving skills, students are more self-discovery. Therefore, strict discipline is not appropriate in here.
