The discussion below is about the personality type ESTJ which is extraversion, sensing, thinking, and judging. The most basic description of this type is that they are an outgoing realist who deals with factual data to make decisions. This type is not always understanding of other types who are different and is also not shy about letting people know their thoughts on any particular subject. This personality type is found throughout many organizations in leadership roles. In my particular profession the United States Navy we are largely this type. Having multiple ESTJ’s in an organization makes for an interesting discussion. A large part of my job in the Navy is talking to Sailors in my command; I am tasked with keeping the pulse of the organization. Being an extravert is very helpful in this part of my job. According to the website for personality page extraverts can be gregarious and direct. This description helps me in the biggest part of my job which is the enforcement of regulations. It is a little easier for me to engage directly with Sailors about issues they may be having with this trait than someone who is a natural introvert. I will say that this part of me has changed and I am now less of an extravert than I was when I was younger because I talk to people all day long. When I get home, I prefer not to have a full social schedule anymore as much as I used to. I noticed this about myself this year as after a speaking engagement with hundreds of people and a dinner, the next day I preferred to stay at home vice going out to dinner with friends. What has worked for me in bridging this gap is to discuss with people that I empathize with them that this is a difficult decision, but it must be made and the reasons why I made it. This seems to be a nice bridge and sort of soften the blow if the decision is a tough call or controversial. Thinking and feeling have also caused me personal conflict because my initial job in the military was being a trauma medic assigned to the Marine Corps. This job requires quick decisions to be made that are lifesaving or ending. Usually later when the situation has calmed down the emotion of the situation hits you and the feeling portion of human nature comes out. When I did that job it was always an interesting dichotomy. The final letter in my type is J which stands for judging and the opposite of judging is perception. These two are very interesting as
