Vision plays an important part in a leader’s life, in fact in anyone’s life. Without something to aim for we will always hit the target of missed purpose. Outlining a vision is essential for leading others and yourself. Within this paper, I will give a summary of the “Developing a Personal Vision Statement” assessment by Hackman and Johnson (2013), convey what I have learned from this exercise, how my self-understanding has increased, and what this reveals about my strengths and weaknesses as a leader. Lastly, based upon this assessment, steps to become a more effective leader will also be considered.

The things I find most important are the very things people often tell me to “chill” about. I want efficient, life affecting, perspective altering goals reached. Without logic, responsibility, capability, and ambition I am not going to have the sense of accomplishment I desire.

I want productivity. Most things I care about as a person deal with implementing or carrying out a well organized plan. Thus grafted with my personal vision statement is a sense of motion and progression. Yet, underneath all of this is still a sense of tranquility as I seek logical, harmonious way of accomplishing my vision while still maintaining true friendships. This increased understanding of myself will be helpful as I evaluate my potential strengths and weaknesses and how to improve my effectiveness as a leader.

The values that are important to me are the things “go getters” are made out of. Action is a strength that can make one effective but it must be channeled in the right direction. Even still, I need to be careful to not shy away from some of the more personable values. Simply because I do not see a value as the most important one on the table does not mean it is of no significance to another. To continue an inner harmony, I need to be honest with myself and others to know when I am pushing it too hard or when I need to pick up the slack. Though being responsible often brings social recognition, I need to give the recognition to followers who are making the vision possible. This goes hand in hand with recognizing the capabilities of my followers and giving them a sense of accomplishment, in the end that will give me a larger sense of accomplishment too. Instead of simply valuing helpfulness, I need to see how that can form true friendships rather than just a working relationship.
