The Red Cross blood drive is a wonderful organization that helps many people and I have the utmost respect for all the people that take the time to donate and help with the Red Cross organization. I’ve always loved helping people and this was an incredible and enjoyable opportunity to not only help out by being an escort and doing other things, however, it was also an eye opener to me since it was like getting a glimpse of what I aspire to be in the future. My main goal for the future is to become a nurse and take care of others. By helping out with the blood drive I saw that the people there cared about their job and acted in a professional way which is what I want to do. In the past, I have volunteered for our bands fundraiser every Christmas, which we host at our high school. It is a unique moment in time, to see the joy of children's faces as they walk into the school that morning for Breakfast with Santa. Being able to put on a performance for those children that morning brings joy to my heart and keeps me coming back each year. Another event is the Special Olympics held in Houghton Lake. Students from our school every year go and help setup and run the Special Olympics. Helping out and getting to talk to participants is an honor and has created new relationships with people. I want to be able to give even more back to my wonderful community through the National Honor Society by volunteering and helping as much as I can. Entering high school with little knowledge of seemed impossible to reach the level of National Honor Society but I set my mind the right way, move from regular classes to Advance Placement classes had lots of sleepless nights but I came out successful in the end, to reach my dreams of becoming a member of the National Honor Society and make them a reality. By reaching the National Honor Society I can show my family how strong I am, that I will be someone successful in the future. So I’m terrified of needles, but they say that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, and I am certainly banking on that to be true every time I go to the Blood Center to donate blood, which is about every two months. I don’t like it, but it’s just such a good thing to do. I used to give whenever they would come around in those buses, but I stopped doing that after my first visit to the Blood Center. I discovered that you get much more individual attention when you go to the Blood Center at about seven o’clock on a Thursday night.
...the opportunity to act as a triage nurse taking weights and blood pressures of our 1600 patients and seeing first-hand how hard it must be to receive quality medical care in their country. Many walked for hours and then stood waiting to be seen in the rain. To them, medical care is more a privilege than a right. This also seems to be true in the United States where the uninsured are turned away from many hospitals to ones, which often lack the resources for expensive operations. This experience has inspired me to serve the underserved.

From a young age, I was drawn to the healthcare field, not because the amount of money doctors, nurses and other health professionals made, but because of the dedication and contentment I saw on their faces helping someone in need. Growing up everyone wanted to become a doctor or a nurse and as a little child being a doctor or a nurse was a profession many parents wanted their child to pursue as a career. Needless to say, I fell into that category because I had high hopes that one day I will become a nurse. However, that dream came to a halt.
People’s lives are changed every day by their actions and experiences. This past summer, I participated in a community service project, an experience that opened my eyes in many ways. I was a volunteer at the County Memorial Hospital. In my time as a volunteer at the hospital, I was able to meet patients and staff members from all over the world and learn about their life experiences. Listening to all of their stories has made me truly appreciate everything which I have.
My main contribution is to focus on the kidney disease and hypertension population to enhance patient outcomes. After many years of being in this profession, my first long-term goal will be to become a nursing instructor. Like many instructors who do it to pass on their knowledge, I want to be able to give back to the nursing community in some way. It is important for someone, like myself, who is thoroughly invested into nursing education to dedicate time teaching the next generation of nurses. Like the great professors I had in my undergraduate studies, I aspire to be an inspiring educator someday. My second long-term goal is to dedicate volunteering time with Doctors without Borders and as an FNP, where my expertise will be needed. Volunteering with Doctors without Borders has been a lifelong career dream and see myself joining the team in approximately fifteen years. Because I have a small toddler and want to have more children in the future, the best time to join Doctors without Borders will be when my children are independent young adults. My journey to become a nurse began when my youngest sister was diagnosed with synovial cell sarcoma. We spent months at the hospital by her side throughout her chemotherapy, radiation and several surgeries. Being around all those families and children in the hospital when many had illness's much worse than hers really opened my eyes to how much of an impact healthcare workers make on so many people’s lives and their families lives too. Although the situations that those children were in seemed so terrible, they had such joy and hope in their eyes.
On Tuesday August 23rd 2016 and Saturday August 27th 2016, I volunteered to help the North Georgia Family Crisis Center with a charity kid’s fashion show. Tuesday was the rehearsal for the fashion show, and unfortunately I didn’t get to help out much because I was held up at a meeting. However, on Saturday, I got the chance to participate more and I experienced an opportunity that I believe was a great advantage to me and will benefit me in the future.
