I have always known that I wanted to help people and make an impact on other’s lives since I was young, but it took some time to realize that nursing was how I wanted to fulfill that passion. My dream to become a nurse came about during my last year and a half of college, which I can also say has been the most significant time period in my life so far. The first few years of college before this turning point reflects me as someone who was confused and in search of a purpose. My life changed for the better when I began my internship as a Clinical Assistant in the Neurobehavioral Unit at Kennedy Krieger Institute. I had worked with individuals with autism and intellectual disabilities previously in high school and through different volunteer opportunities, but the behavior disorders was something that was very new to me. I stuck to that goal and took a total of 50 credits in just two semesters in order to graduate on time. Although, it was much more than just completing these credits on time, I needed to raise my GPA to a 3.0 in order to be a candidate for a nursing program. I never lost focus of this goal and graduated with a Dean’s List award and a 3.043 GPA after a year of 7+ courses a semester and working full-time. The accelerated BSN will help me achieve my professional goals to become a psychiatric nurse because it will allow me to use the personal attributes I gained in the healthcare setting to excel in school and meet my career goals. A nursing career will allow me to make a difference in the lives of those with mental disabilities which will reflect positively in our community. I can confidently say I am ready for this rigorous program after proving to myself and many others how hard I worked to be a qualified candidate for this nursing
