I am Uniqua Parham and I am an enthusiastic person that is very interested in working in the healthcare industry. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in health science with a pre-physical therapy tract. I am currently in my final full time semester and this summer I will be taking my final course for my degree. I chose to become a physical therapist because I have wanted to work in healthcare for a long time, but I found out as a teenager that I am squeamish with other people’s blood. As a result, I chose a career path where I could still work in healthcare but deal with as little blood as possible. I chose to interview Mrs. Mary, Mrs. Jen, and Ms. Katonda because they all have experience with working in the hospital and that is the setting that I am looking to work in. I have also thought about becoming a college educator for physical therapy students and Mrs. Jen and Mrs. Mary are currently working as nursing lab staff, but they also work with the physical therapy staff throughout the semester. The job outlook is also greater for me if I become as physical therapist as well at 34% versus 13% for a post-secondary educator. While becoming a post-secondary educator for physical therapy students seems like a great idea, I like that physical therapist are actually working with their patients more so than I like the idea of teaching. I have learned a lot between these two careers through this researcher paper that I have a better understanding what interest me more. I believe physical therapy is more relaxed and calm environment for my patients and me. Some physical therapist has crazy work hours but most of them have regular 5 to 9 hours and come home to family members who worked in this particular field one became a respiratory therapist and the other is still in school working on her Doctor of Physical Therapy. During my undergraduate years in college I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to become when I “grew up”. I would study various professions and never felt like anything fit for me. One evening I sat down with my aunt, a nurse, and I was talking to her about how I couldn’t decide on a major and how frustrating it was to be in college feeling as if I did not have any direction. She looked at me with complete surprise on her face and said, “You aren’t applying for nursing school?” I stared at her for a moment because I was confused as to why she would ask me that. She chuckled and proceeded to tell me that she had always assumed that I would be a nurse because I spent several years of my life taking care of my 3 year old cousin who had cancer. For three years I was his caregiver and it had never occurred to me that I could make a living caring for people. I then spent countless hours researching nursing and what exactly nurses did. This was it! I had finally found what I wanted to do for the rest of my life! It took no time at all to know that I wanted to specialize in pediatrics. Throughout my clinical experiences in nursing school I have immensely enjoyed working on the Pediatric units as well as the Nursery. I am now absolutely certain that I am meant to be a pediatric nurse. Cook Children’s is recognized as a Magnet-designated hospital and is one of the best children’s hospitals in the US. I endured a very impoverished upbringing and my family’s socioeconomic status was below the poverty line. At a very young age, money became the central issue of my life. I had known for years that I wanted to work in the health care field, but I always believed it would be as a doctor. Many people are not understanding the importance of having a physical therapist after surgery or any physical accidents. However, you should reconsider physical therapy as a job because it promotes the patient’s ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability. My ambition to pursue a health-related career derived from my passion for helping and caring for people. However, deciding on a profession did not come as easy. Participating in my high school’s health academy was just the stepping-stone into the health world. After graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Exercise Science, I was still not sure of the specific health career to pursue.
I have always had a passion for nursing. As a child, I watched my mother getting up early, putting her scrubs on and headed out the door for a 12 hour shift. She was always content, and at ease to go for a long shift and even overtime at times. I love the fact that after work, she would always come home, satisfied with the day no matter how hard it was for her. She would sit and tell my brothers and sisters how she enjoyed the conversations that she had with her patients and what impact she had on their lives that day. Listening to these stories as a child, I knew that I wanted to become a nurse and listening to the same stories and helping people, making their day feel better. I wanted to follow my mom’s footsteps. At the end of a long shift, it is a rewarding profession, knowing that I am saving people’s lives, making them comfortable when they are near of dying, advocate and teaching them. As nurses, we care for patients through illness, injury, aging, health. We also promote health, prevent diseases and teaching the community; that’s what I love about nursing. As with any profession, there are some current issues in the field of Health Care that relate to Physical Therapy. This includes the Affordable Care Act, Medicare, and individuals with disabilities. Physical therapy is a fun and exciting healthcare profession that helps people. It is all about helping other people who have problems with their body, muscles, joints and other parts of their body. Patients includes accident victims and individuals with disabling conditions such as low back pain, arthritis, heart disease, fractures, head injuries, and cerebral palsy. Physical therapy will perform an evaluation of your problem or difficulty. They evaluate your problem by performing tests and measures to assess the problem. These tests includes muscle strength, joint motion, sensory and neurological, coordination, balance, observation, palpation, flexibility, postural screening, movement analysis, and special tests are designed for a particular problem. Next, they develop a treatment plan and goals and then manage the appropriate treatment to aid in recovery of a problem or dysfunction. Physical therapists are able to treat their patients by using many different treatments depending on the type of injury. Some of the treatments are electrical stimulation, hot and cold packs, infrared and ultrasound to reduce swelling or relieve pain. These treatments are used to help decrease pain and increase movement and function. Therapeutic exercises instructions will help restore strength, movement, balance, or skill as a guide towards full functional recovery. Physical therapy provides "hands on techniques" like massage or joint mobilizations skills to restore joint motion or increase soft tissue flexibility. They will focus on basic skills such as getting out of bed, walking safely with crutches or a walker, moving specific joints and muscles of the body. Physical therapists treatment includes patient education to teach them how to deal with a current problem and how to prevent the problem in the future. Such documentation is used to track the patient's progress, and identify areas requiring more or less attention. They encourage patients to use their own muscles. Their main goal is to improve how an individual functions at work and home.
Since I now have researched all of the important facts about what it takes to become a physical therapist, the pro’s and con’s, information about current trends like the new health care laws, and learned about where the field is at today, I can now make a more informed decision about this career choice. At this time in my life I’m not prepared to take on the requirements that are needed to get into the DPT program. I am still interested in the field and since I can get a bachelors degree in any field to start the requirements for the program I may still consider this occupation as a career choice and pursue this more in the future. I do enjoy helping people and working hands and have always been interested in the health care field so this will be a great option that I’m now more informed about. 13
