I have written numerous personal statements throughout my academic career —or so I thought. The personal statements that I have written prior were not of a professional caliber. They failed to accurately capture who I am as an individual, a scholar, a philanthropist and an entrepreneur. It was through the plentitude of knowledge that EssayEdge provided, where I gain the understanding that a personal statement is much more than writing about your life story and your goals. It is for this reason why I felt that EssayEdge helped me the most in my understanding of what a personal statement is.

Although, IUPUI gave step-by-step plan for a personal statement, it was more geared towards those who have an interest in gaining admission to graduate school in psychology. Most of the examples and advice were geared towards those who want to pursue a career in psychology. As a nursing major, this may or may not be as beneficial. Carnegie Mellon did a great job at portraying to writers how to enhance their personal statements by manipulating certain words and phrases. The only complication with this website was the fact that it gave specific example instead of explaining what a personal statement was. The advice given on The City College of NY to write personal statements did not measure up to the other websites. It was very brief, lacked dimension and left room for error. They provided questions as a guide to write a personal statement, however, the questions were very vague. Unlike the other websites, The City College of NY made it seem as if a personal statement was more “personal” instead of academic. The way the OWL of Purdue University website explained how to write a personal statement. It also lacked depth. It was as if it was meant for higher-level graduates of the most accomplished institutions who have already had experience with formatting a personal
