During my time at school, I was presented the wonderful opportunity with some of my classmates to attend a trip to an Indigenous community in Far North Queensland, to help serve, teach the children and provide basic care. This life-changing trip has fuelled my desire to help people, whether it is in an overseas context or in my community. As a result, I decided to take a step into being more involved in the wider school community as a youth leader. This consisted of developing leadership skills and a safe environment where other adolescents can connect with one another. As a dental assistant, I was able to display empathy and compassion. I learnt to understand and subsequently address patients’ concerns and apprehension to treatment by notifying to the dentist when the patient is uncomfortable, informing patients and to answer any questions about the procedure. Also, it has further refined my age-appropriate interpersonal skills through working with children and parents. During my time working in food services and as a dental assistant, I learnt the qualities of teamwork which is the emphasis of being approachable and demonstrating good communication skills including verbal and non-verbal communication. This comprises of interacting with clients and colleagues to help maintain a calm environment. Also, I consider myself as organised, reliable and hardworking which allows me to cope in these fast-paced environments as I was able to prioritise daily tasks and multi-task, whilst maintaining high standards of customer service.
