My weaknesses before coming into English 101, was difficulty in constructing the thesis statement and my thoughts would be all over the place, there was no flow in the essay. This semester I’ve learned several things throughout English 101. I’ve learned different writing techniques, transition words, how to find resources online and using them effectively, and MLA formatting. I’ve learned these skills from class work and essays assignments. Although I still need more improvement, I’ve become a better writer because I’ve learned how to properly create a strong thesis statement, and making the essay flow with organized ideas by using outlines. However, I still have to improve on the following skills, word diction, grammar, and citations. In the beginning of the semester, one of my major problems was constructing my thesis statement. A thesis is a short statement, usually one sentence, that summarizes the main point or claim of an essay, research paper, etc., and is developed, supported, and explained in the text with examples and evidence. Without a well-developed thesis, your essay will be unorganized. I always had trouble choosing the main points of the essay. It’s not that I haven’t improved on them, because I have but I still consider those skills my major weaknesses because I haven’t mastered them yet. Although, I have been a good student at school, I always have struggles doing my homework like any other student. Sometimes, it is difficult to me to understand my assignments; however, I always try to obtain a knowledge from my courses. In this case English 111, like any other course left a mark on my academic and personal life.
My first college English class was ENC 1101 at the State College of Florida. In this course, I learned a vast amount of information about writing, reading, and grammar. When I first walked into ENC 1101 in August, I expected the class to be like any other English class in High School; with rushed busy work and a lot of useless tests and quizzes. However, throughout each week of the semester, Professor Knutsen’s class made me beg to differ. This class was not like any other high school English class. In this class I actually learned important information and did not do work just to complete it. A working thesis statement should include a rough idea of your topic and the important point you want to make about that topic. Writing this statement at the top of a rough draft or outline and looking at it often can help you remain focused throughout the essay. However, the thesis statement that you begin with is not set in stone. If you find that your essay shifts topic slightly, you can change your thesis in later drafts so that it matches your new focus.
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
Writing has never been a strength I have possessed. English 102 has been difficult and challenging for me because I have had to move past the high school level of a basic book report or a five paragraph paper that has narrowed my ideas of writing for many years. Putting on paper what my thoughts are in a way that is logical and accurate for what the assignment is asking has been hard for me this semester. My ideas are now more involved because I have learned through English 102 how to develop my writing skills in different formats, for example, in an annotated bibliography and a research paper. Writing papers has been one of my biggest fears as a student. High school English class prepared me for the editing of my essays, for example, grammatical errors, spelling, font errors, and things that were under the category of fixing my paper. I realized that the writing process requires more than just editing, you have to understand that the paper is like a human body, it cannot function if every single part is not effective. I can certainly say that I have improved as a writer a great deal and this portfolio and the final revised drafts of my work certainly can argue for that. English 101 was certainly different from my other English classes; we actually focused on different parts of the writing process in each class instead of wasting our time discussing the same components of the process over and over again. As I reflect on my experiences throughout the semester of English 101 I am aware that I have met very important requirements of writing that I feel were very valuable for me as a student and my writing has improved progressively.
As my English 101 class comes to an end, I have realized how much I have transformed as a writer. In this essay, I am going to explain what I realized my strengths and weaknesses are as a writer and how they have manifested themselves throughout the quarter. I was skeptical at first coming into this class knowing that English takes formidable work and dedication, but I am very proud of the progress I have made. We completed a great deal of work throughout the quarter; from grammar exercises, summary reviews, and two challenging essays. Throughout the quarter I found myself improving in each category. As a writer, my skills and confidence have developed into more clarity and thought, something I have always wanted to be, as a result of a well constructed class that led to a superb educational experience.

Entering college as a junior in High School has others expecting great things from you. But what I learned in my Highschool classes doesn’t amount to the expectations, grading, and teaching of college level courses. In my old High School English classes, expectations and grading were a lot less harsh. We did not have to cite information all but once or twice, and we primarily used much of our class time reviewing books, movies, and authors. All my English classes were more analytical than formal writing.
A thesis statement makes the reader aware of the topics you will be discussing and your details to support them. Before developing my thesis, I found it easier for me to create a list of all my topics and reasons to support those topics with detail. From that list I was better able to create my thesis. A thesis allows you to create a nice flow to the paper by setting up the order of the chosen topics within the statement itself. For example; Music has influenced my life and America in many positive ways, for example; Music brings out individuality, can be useful in education, and creates appreciation for other cultures and diversity.
Before this class, I understood purpose was important; however, during this class I have discovered that putting more focus on purpose can result in a more interesting thesis and paper. Hello! I’m super excited for this class because I find I usually really enjoy English-based classes. You might like to know that I’m a PSEO student here at Century. I go to an online high school called IQ Academy; I actually really enjoy and would definitely recommend it. I took a few classes here at Century College this past fall semester and I’m planning on coming back next fall.
The September sunshine beams down over my shoulders. The calm and cool breeze blew all around. My junior year of High School is going to be like my first day, so I thought. I perused my schedule; Biotech, Marketing, Pre-Calc, Chemistry, Economics, Elements of Fiction. Nothing caught my eye to be necessarily hard, but I was horribly wrong.
Throughout the semester I have had many ups and downs with my English abilities. I have been pushed to my limits in ways I will forever benefit from. All year I was nervous and dreading the course like I always do, as I am not very strong in English. However, after completing the course, and based off what I have learnt this semester, I don't think I'll ever get that nervous feeling again. Considering I went to a completely French elementary school, we rarely had English class.
