My teammates, Alex Wu, Andrea Palate, Namara Haq, and I rode the bus, went to city hall, visited the Brookside biking path, Arbor Villa Tennis Court Park, the Plaza, McGonigle’s Market, and KC Community Gardens. The experiences I had visiting these places helped me connect the concepts to the material I learned in class. First, we walked over to Brookside where there was a place to rent bikes to ride on the trail. The Brookside area is an older part of Kansas City, but is well kept and modernized. We waited for the bus and hopped on and because it was our first time riding the KC bus, we ended up getting lost. What I noticed when I was riding the bus was that the people that ride the bus come from a poorer social class. The first bus took us out to 75th street near Waldo, so we had to get off and catch the Main Max to get to City Hall. What we noticed was that as you go farther out the areas are much nicer and have been gentrified for the younger population, and as we got closer to City Hall, the buildings get more dilapidated and run down. Inside of City Hall there are several departments including finance, law, and health. After we visited City Hall, we rode the bus back to the Plaza. The Plaza is an example of a very wealthy historic site displaying Gesellschaft. It was the first shopping center in the world following the idea of people travelling to it by automobile, and the architectural design is based off of Seville, Spain. The Plaza demonstrates the idea of Gesellschaft, in the fact that its sole purpose is to provide a public space for people to come and shop. People come from all over the country to spend money at fancy shops without much social interaction with others. The article The Beginning of the End of a Modern Ghetto by Sudhir Alladi Venkatesh discusses the racial and class stereotypes that obscured the way Chicago's Robert Taylor Homes functioned. When it opened in November 1962, Robert Taylor Homes, were twenty-eight sixteen-story buildings containing 4,300 units on Chicago's South Side, and was considered the world's largest public housing project. This demonstrated how much space and money was invested into this public housing project. The managers of the Chicago Housing Authority at first tried to work with the tenants but were quickly overwhelmed by the task of maintaining the enormous physical plant inhabited by thousands of children. The tenant applicant screening committees of managers and tenants eventually stopped meeting, the population grew steadily poorer, and by the 1970s single mothers on welfare made up the majority of the adult residents. The wind was very powerful for this course on the Tell City Country Club through these enormous green hills of the golf course. Dead grass and brown leaves were blowing nonstop. All nine of the schools slowly started walking up to the starting line. Everyone was looking at each other while representing their own school with showing their school color off with pride. There were three teams total that knew that would be an extremely close score. My team and I stood in our red jerseys knowing that we were going to be the ones to win. As my family piled into our car for our four-hour drive, I sincerely hoped my brothers wouldn’t ruin the best chance that we’ve had in a long time. They were already arguing about who got what video game, and were not making my mom and dad feel any better about going. We were going to Illinois, to Chicago, to be even more specific. It was a warm April day and all of the students were let out of school for the day. I went home to finish packing with the help of my parents making sure that I had everything and I wasn 't forgetting. I was excited for a week now to go on the trip to Washington D.C. with the whole 8th grade class for a week.
Whenever we go out shopping or relaxing at malls, we actually don’t see or recognize any effects of malls as we mostly go there for these two reasons. Malls are an integral part in the lives of America. They are shopping centers that have created a lot of buzz in many writers. This is because we have more malls in America than high schools. Malls have received praises from people like James J. Farrell, Jon Pahl and George Lewis who view malls as not only shopping centers but also as places that provide a reflection of the American culture and serve as centers of pleasure and entertainment. In contrast, William Kowinski and David Gutterson criticize malls for just being an artificial environment that creates disorientation among American shoppers. In my opinion, malls are just magnificent commercial buildings that create a sense of false dreams and imagination.

I smile at the old black woman and she smile back and I got off the train. I made my way of the clowned stairways leading up to the streets at the 1500 block of Market Street, coming out of city hall facing Love Park. Looking around trying to find the best place to sit giving a good view of everyone and everything. Scanning around, I realize how downtown was. The matitude of city hall and love park, Dalworth Plaza Park with people staking the lights the arts this was breath taking to me.
Goss argues that developers and designers of the built environment, specifically shopping centers and malls, use the power of place and understanding the structural layout of the space to boost consumption of the retail profits. Shopping centers are separated from the downtown area of shopping, either by distance and/or design. These establishments emerge for many to be the new heart and location for public and social life. In his article The "Magic of the Mall": An Analysis of Form, Function, and Meaning in the Contemporary Retail Built Environment, Goss also argues that the regulation of the spaces within the mall creates an atmosphere of "community" rather than one that is "public". This article’s main argument is that developers manufacture an illusion of doing more than just shopping when designing malls and shopping centers.
We say hello, help each other out if needed. It’s very nice, almost as if I live in the suburbs again where all of my neighbors are friends. I just walked past Mrs Beverly and her chihuahua, Stella. We say our usual “hello’s” and go about our ways. I wonder why she’s walking her dog so late.
In a simple way, the retailer needs to create a warm, friendly and an approachable retail space to attract consumers.The visual displays is an imperative element of branding of any store. If the stock is presentable, it is bound to appeal to the shoppers. If the shoppers appreciate the store layout and product, they are likely to spend more time in the store, and in return reward the store with sales. Along with the products for sales, the staff, the décor, the store interiors, the trial rooms arrangement, the lightings and music also form an inclusive elements boosting store sales. Shopping malls have become meeting places, similar to town halls in the old west. Malls are where people go to explore and experience everything retailers have to offer while indulging in their own personal sport of acquiring different products. The question of what malls bring to society has been questioned for years do they promote rapid consumerism or a life of luxury. Victor Gruen, the inventor of shopping malls, saw these centers as a source of community similar to his homeland in Europe.
