Personal Narrative: My Passion For Nursing

Hippocrates supposedly stated “Wherever the art of Medicine is loved, there is also a love of Humanity”. He believed that everybody that practiced or learned about medicine innately had compassion toward others, as in order to practice medicine, one has to care for others. Growing up in Canada as an immigrant has provided an environment in which care and compassion was not only beneficial but required. Whether it was helping our neighbors when we were living in a hostel, or taking care of certain responsibilities with my brother in order to reduce the burden for my parents; my empathy for others has only grown since then. My love for humanity and my passion for biology are the two primary reasons behind choosing the nursing program at Ryerson and choosing a career as a nurse. …show more content…

Not being able to afford certain material goods and a number of services seem like obvious drawbacks, however, due to those very drawbacks, I benefitted in other ways. Instead of spending my time playing with toys and games, I spent my time helping with tasks around the house, or whatever errands that I could help with, as I did not want my parents to be stressed with extra work. I learned that helping individuals through tough times, by doing simple things such as talking about current events and issues, or helping people with mundane tasks, can really bring happiness to not only them but yourself too. Furthermore, the satisfaction of providing help, even in a minor sense, is the reason why I resonated so well with the moral codes that medical professionals pride themselves of
