This week I began my three-year journey to become an advance practice nurse with a doctoral degree the terminal degree in nursing practice. I was very exciting as I left my home for my one-hour drive to the school campus in the pouring rain. Many song have been written about it never raining in southern California but this was not so. On arrival at the campus, the staff was there at the entrance to direct the new nervous students to their assigned classroom. Like myself my new classmate were eager to embark on this journey, yet apprehensive of the unknown. My interest in nursing first stemed when my grandfather was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer. Hospice had come into their home, and I was amazed at how they coped with their job. The people who took care of the person I loved the most, were compassionate and caring. Most of all they helped all of us through a time of need. During that time I realized helping people in whatever way I could in the medical field, was the career for me. My grandmother was also a nurse. She would tell me stories of when she worked in different hospitals. When I heard all of her experiences, I wanted to make memories of my own in the nursing field. It has been over one year since I have started the accelerated nursing program at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. When I first started the program in fall 2014, I have no idea what nursing was like. Although I had my bachelor from another institution, everything I learned was very different compared to the information I have learned in School of Nursing. Nursing school has slowly transformed me into a graduate professional nurse based on the professional development that I have completed along the way.
Our course, Transition to Professional Nursing, is barely two weeks old and already I am being enlightened and challenged to expand my experience of nursing. I will attempt to explain my personal journey and experience thus far including how and why I got here, my beliefs about nursing and related values, and my visions for the future.
For this assignment I had the pleasure sitting down with Emily Petermeier and getting an insight on what the real nursing world is like. Emily graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing in May 2015, and got a job at Fairview East Bank Hospital. This interview really helped me understand what it is like to be a new nurse and the dedication that I have to have going through nursing school and throughout my career. The nurse who chooses to return to school is secure, is not afraid to face change, and views education as preparation for the future (Altmann, 2011). Nonetheless, returning to school can cause disruption, which may lead to feelings of self-doubt. Developing coping strategies helps to alleviate these concerns. Personally, the decision to continue my nursing education revolves around my job. As an advocate for the mental health population, I want to become a leader who influences the future of mental health services in our region; education will help me achieve these goals.
When I began this journey I knew that Nursing was all I wanted to do and in order to succeed and do well in nursing school, it was going to require a ton of devotion and sacrifice. Nursing school did not come without its challenges, not only did we have to deal with going to class, clinicals, studying for exams, but we also had to add in the factors of jobs, family, marriages, children, sickness and our daily life. But our instructors encouraged us and pushed us to keep going, and for that we are grateful because we all made a decision to stick with it, and here we are today. It seems unimaginable that just a year ago this journey was just beginning, but here we are today a year later,
When I first decided to come to college for nursing after staying in university for three years, I had an argument with my parents because they were not happy with my decision. My parents just wanted me to finish rest of my degree and they thought that it did not make sense to go to college for diploma, and not complete the university degree. However, I just wanted to complete my nursing diploma in the same amount of time that I can finish my degree in the university because I always wanted to be a nurse.
My courses and experience has empowered, and has reinforced my determination to pursue a career as a nurse. I am eager and excited about starting nursing school, and having my dream which started as a young girl to come full circle. I am convinced I am a good candidate because I have the innate drive to complete the program. I am willing to learn and use those skills and knowledge acquired to provide something meaningful to the society and humanity. I have the personal determination to face the challenges and rigors of nursing school. With hard work, perseverance, and determination I believe I have the essential character to be successful as a nursing student and an excellent quality nurse in the near future. A degree in nursing paves ways for other degrees to emerge especially for those interested in furthering their education in health care. I am committed to continue to pursed advanced degree in nursing ultimately becoming a nurse practitioner. . In the next five to ten years from now, I want to write articles and books about nursing and healthcare related. Therefore, I believe that if I improve myself further positively, I will grow from strength to strength and one day my paper will be read in one of the prestigious newsletters, journals, and textbooks. I started my Nursing career in India and then I came to the United States and became an RN. I entered Nursing with the thinking that Nursing is a profession that will always allow me to have a job and all my patients will get better. However, from my experiences I understood that Nursing is more than just giving medications, and it requires clinical competence, cultural sensitivity, ethics, caring for others, and life-long learning about others and the evolving field of medicine. Florence Nightingale once said:
Reflecting on my home visit experience, I have realized that although it was not completely intentional and planned, each phase of the nursing process was present as the interviews progressed. The initial visit mainly consisted of the assessment phase because it was the first contact with my client and there was a lot of information to discover. This time allowed me to determine objective and subjective data, which includes the concerns my client had about falls, as well as additional information that was shared. The assessment phase continued into the second home visit in hopes of collecting additional data that would help to develop a nursing diagnosis (Potter, Boxerman, Wolf, Marshall, Grayson, Sledge & Evanoff, 2004). Near the end of the first home visit, my client and I collaborated on a health goal of fall prevention, which can also be referred to as the nursing diagnosis. The next step, which is planning, took place within part of the first home visit. I observed the client and her available resources, coming up with ideas on how this goal could be achieved, such as registering for some exercise classes (see home visit #2 plan in Appendix A for more specific suggestions). The implementation phase began in the second home visit when I provided my client with the fall prevention pamphlets and presented my suggestions (see Appendix C for pamphlets and all health information provided to client). This phase continued into the final home visit as a follow up on subjects she requested to know more about (see home visit #3 plan in Appendix A). As new nursing graduates begin the process of transitioning into the nursing practice. There are many challenges and issues associated throughout the transition. New graduates may embark on their journey through a graduate program or seek employment solo. The transition period may consist of challenges, that students will encounter during their journey. This essay will identify, discuss, and critically reflect on key nursing challenges that student nurses may face, throughout the process of the transition phase.
My journey to nursing began with my personal healthcare experience, and has continued to evolve since entering the nursing program at State University. My personal philosophy of nursing is related my life experience and my personal philosophy of life. Using reflection-on-action, I have begun to understand the influences that have lead me to nursing. I discovered client and family centered care to be an important quality when I look at the influential nurses in my life. To develop a positive therapeutic nurse-client relationship, nurses must integrate all 5 dimensions of the therapeutic nurse-client relationship into their practice (CNO, 2006). When it comes to providing client-centered care, the dimensions of trust, empathy and respect are particularly important (CNO, 2006). Illness can be a traumatic experience for patients and their families, and it is important to be empathetic to the patient’s needs, while still trusting the patient to be an expert in their illness and care.
As mentioned by Hunter and Arthur (2016), one of the main reasons I could maintain and improve my practice was due to clinical placements. During clinical placements we are frequently being assessed and taught in dealing with real situations. Feelings As learning is a lifelong process, I’m sure there are many things I need to improve and learn to better myself. However, the lessons I learned during the course as a nursing student shall always remain as a bedrock for my future development.
At the age of 36, mom decided to return back to college to obtain her nursing degree. This wasn’t a hard decision for her to make. The April before she enrolled in school my great grandmother passed away. This major dilemma played a major role in mom’s returning back to school. She had taken care of my great grandmother for months before she passed away, and decided that she wanted to make an impact on the lives of geriatrics.
