Ever since I first heard about The National Honor Society during my freshman year, I knew I wanted to be involved with it. With this goal in mind, I have worked extremely hard the past two years to maintain my 4.0 GPA, improve in all of my sports, and help my community whernever possible. Some places/events I have volunteered for include the Hopedale day care, Oly Swish basketball camps and games, and helping renovate our high school softball fields. While all of these are enjoyable, my favorite, by far, is helping at Oly Swish camps and games! I have played basketball for going on 8 years now, and I can't even begin to explain how greatly this simple game has changed my life for the better. Without it I wouldn't be half the leader I have
It runs through my veins and I cannot live without it. For a long time I did not know who I was but one day, through a basketball camp, a coach helped me realize what my identity was. He helped me figure out that i am a child of God. All my uncles played basketball along with both of my Grandfathers. For a long time I thought that basketball had to be the only thing to define me but, it does not.
However, most of my volunteer work comes from outside of the school, such as; Pelotonia, Light the Night for leukemia and lymphoma, Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities, etc. For many of these organizations I have volunteered more than once. Volunteering at Light the Night has a story. For my 16th Birthday party, I wanted to have my friends and I volunteer for the day while having fun at night. So I had 7 boys and girls, along with me, volunteer for Light the Night, organized by me.
In the past, I have volunteered for our bands fundraiser every Christmas, which we host at our high school. It is a unique moment in time, to see the joy of children's faces as they walk into the school that morning for Breakfast with Santa. Being able to put on a performance for those children that morning brings joy to my heart and keeps me coming back each year. Another event is the Special Olympics held in Houghton Lake. Students from our school every year go and help setup and run the Special Olympics. Helping out and getting to talk to participants is an honor and has created new relationships with people. I want to be able to give even more back to my wonderful community through the National Honor Society by volunteering and helping as much as I can. Prompt: In 500 words or more, describe your collegiate experience thus far. How has this experience and the knowledge you've gained influenced what you plan to study? How have they influenced your decision to apply to St. Edward's?
Walking into Walnut Hills High School right now would have anyone thinking the just walked into the middle of a tornado. Everyone you look there are students running in and out of doors, in and out of cars, and most certainly either turning in missing assignments or retaking tests. There is only one way for you to explain all this ciaos, Senior Year, the year that all teens await with so much excitement and ambition and the year that every single hour long study dates pays off. For the class of 2021 this isn’t just their final year at Walnut Hills this is the year that friends separate and head off to their different university to follow their dreams.
The National Honor Society has four goals: to ignite a passion for scholarship; to inspire a fervor in its members to help others; to advocate leadership; and to further the development of fortitude and integrity in high school students. However, I believe that organizations like the National Honor Society accomplish so much more in our community and school. The National Honor Society not only unites like-minded students that are willing to work towards a better future, but it also amplifies the voices of those whose accomplishments lie in their ability to express themselves. Furthermore, NHS provides an opportunity for students like me to broaden their horizons and become active members of society.
I volunteer in a lot of activities, especially considering I am a girl scout. We organize many drives for things such as food and sports equipment and everybody enjoys themselves while doing it. I volunteer at church sometimes, contributing my time to making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the hungry, instead of doing pointless things at home. Being a good person isn’t just about being kind to everyone around you. You have to put those great things about you into use and help your community. That’s what makes you a great choice for the National Junior Honor Society.
The National Honor Society is based off of four pillars: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. School is an extremely important part of anyone’s life, and I feel blessed that I have had the opportunity to attend Lutheran schools from Kindergarten until the present. Our Shepherd Lutheran and Lutheran High Northwest have helped me to grow in my faith and to continue to grow academically as well. Attending these schools has also allowed me to participate in many different extra-curricular activities such as Varsity Soccer in my freshman year, Varsity Track my sophomore year, Pit Band for school musicals, Jazz band, and Pep band. This 2009-2010 school year I also have the opportunity to be the First Chair Flute and Piccolo in regular Concert Band and the other band functions which will provide me with an opportunity to gain experience in leadership which will help me in college and in my future career. Service is an important activity to participate in. During the past two years I have helped my mom and the rest of the committee at my church with funeral luncheons. When there is a funeral at my church the family of the deceased has the option of having a luncheon at the church, and if they choose, following the funeral, the committee that my mom is on takes care of getting the food that the family wants, serving the food, and then cleaning up after the luncheon is over. When they need help I also go and help out. Also, my family recently became a Foster family for the Michigan Humane Society. In November of this year, I am going on a mission trip to Madrid, Spain, with my cousin, who is a pastor, and a group from his church, Valley Springs, in Roseville, California. Our main aim is going to be talking to the college students there and trying to plant churches. We are going to be helping them work on their English, and I will get to use my Spanish. I have also had the opportunity to work in the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer nursery which was my first paying job. Every Sunday morning I am in the nursery from 9 until 12, or later if needed, watching peoples children up to four years of age while they attend church.
In this effort, I serve the community by making an effort to keep the people in it healthier. Lastly, I show service to my school through the help I provided while in the National Junior Honor Society. As a member of NJHS I helped our middle school begin a recycling program; I helped get the recycling boxes and bins ready, gather paper from around the school, and sort the paper after school. Through this I show a dedication to my school and community, because not only does recycling help the school reduce waste but it also allows the environment resources to last longer. For these reasons, I am an excellent, determined, helpful member, who is more than willing to provide service to my school and community.
Once there was a girl who is no different than you that was struggling with something inside her. This evil force is called depression. Depression is an illness runs in her family, which made it easier for her to develop it. At school it was like she was someone else. Suicide was a concern of her family. School was the most exceedingly terrible bad dream, not by virtue of she could not have cared less for it, but rather it was the people that encompassed her. At school one day all of this changed, because of her angel Mrs. Ogle. That girl was me.
Entering high school with little knowledge of seemed impossible to reach the level of National Honor Society but I set my mind the right way, move from regular classes to Advance Placement classes had lots of sleepless nights but I came out successful in the end, to reach my dreams of becoming a member of the National Honor Society and make them a reality. By reaching the National Honor Society I can show my family how strong I am, that I will be someone successful in the future. The best part of achieving the requirements for the National Honor Society was to accomplish the amount of community service hours. My extracurricular activities and groups that I belong to fall into the two main areas of my life that I am passionate about: community service and technology/science. I have always wanted to give back to my community because it is the community that has enabled me to be fortunate enough to have opportunities such as these where I can contribute, learn, and grow as a young adult. I have pursued a number of organizations devoted towards giving back and servicing my local community. Those organizations include: Boy Scouts of America, SMYLE youth group (Saint Margaret's Church), and Peer Advocates (Madison Youth and Family Services). The DHHS Tech Club, and the DHHS Hacking Club are the two main technology organizations that I take part in and also have active leadership roles in.
In conclusion, it can be stated that basketball is a sport that has a positive influence on individuals from a tender age right through their adulthood. The sport has improved the overall behavior and performance of young adults, teaches them teamwork and persistence. Basketball also brings unity in communities and races alike, and has a constructive influence on the economy as a whole.
Being part of the basketball clique in high school helped me learn the intrapersonal and social communication skills I use today. As a child playing basketball was my favorite activity or hobby. It's also the way I met a lot of my good friends that I have now. All my close friends I have met. I have met them through playing basketball.. Whether they were on my team, the opposing team or just fans in the crowd who admired my play. Not only has basketball helped me gain friends, but basketball also taught me a lot about life. There are many aspects of life that coincide with basketball. For instance basketball is a team game and an individual game. Like in life you have to work together with other people. The communication skills I learned from basketball helped me communicate with friends, girlfriends, parents and bosses at work.
Basketball is one of the interesting sports I have always wanted to engage myself even as a little child. It was a dream come true when I started playing basketball in my high school. Moreover, I was very good in it, and I became the team leader. Of course, I enjoyed every bite of the time I spent playing basketball. My participation in basketball, has had numerous effects on my life, and these are physical, personal and social.
