Growing Up in North Isle Village: A Childhood Memoir

When I was little, I had a reputation for creating new worlds, but that never would have happened if not for the equally dream-like world I grew up in. Back then, I lived in a place called North Isle Village, a predominantly poor neighborhood in a relatively rich county. Because most of the children’s parents were busy working throughout the week, we ruled the apartment circle with our bikes, scooters, and roller blades. Now, if there’s one thing I’ve noticed growing up, it is the presence of a kid sibling in any large group of friends. The neighborhood kids would eagerly give me advice as kindergarten approached, and would take this hyperactive child’s crazy ideas seriously when creating our imaginary land and language, even if the first drafts were silly. As I grew to become the senior member, I valued those who had joined after me for their playful contributions in helping to make our poor reality into a paradise of boundless worlds. Especially valuable were the new kid siblings of our group. Today, I am fortunate to have kept my lively imagination. I have stacks of journals with inventions because I’ve come to idolize the likes of Tesla and da Vinci, of whom I see as having childish senses of wonder even with adult knowledge. I dream of seats that only let whoever is leaning on them hear music and paper that print from pressurized force. In fact, I have gotten a provisional patent on my idea of picture-stitching drones. They say that adolescence is marked by the search for one’s identity. I’m glad that I was able to consider my place in a community as I now consider my place in the universe.
