The main duties that I participated in included cleaning and sanitation of the kennels, client waiting rooms, and all the treatment rooms. Another duty that I was responsible for was helping the kennel technicans with each patient's nutrition and with their exercise requirements, which I honestly I enjoy this duty requires me to analyze each patients information and cater to each of their needs, this allows me to know each patient on a more personal level. I also help the vet technicians and veterinarians in regards to help prep the surgery room, retrieve and draw up vaccines for patients, help restrain patients for shots, and help restrain for body exams. Then in some way, workers have checklists for each hospitalized pet, so if they need medications, bandage changes, etc, workers can then keep track easier. Every year thousands of animals are euthanized due to animal testing such as cosmetic testing, medical testing, and dissection. (A Critical Look at Animal Experimentation) (Types of Animal Testing) Some of the things we use every day such as; make up, soap, furniture polish, and varieties of cleaning supplies, are tested on rabbits, guinea pigs, dogs, cats, and other animals. (Animal Testing) Cosmetic testing is used to test a product and its ingredients, medical testing finds cures for different illnesses; and dissection is used to help high school students in science classes have a better understanding of the class or students undergoing the medical field in college. (Animal Experimentation) Animal testing is not required by law; it is only used to protect companies from consumer lawsuits, provided new research for diseases, and provide a visual learning experiment for students. (A Critical Look at Animal Experimentation) It has been proven that there are more reliable and less expensive alternatives to animal testing, such as; computer models and cell and tissue tests. Animal experimentation should be eliminated because it is an inhumane method for testing purposes.
I began work that May at a prominent performance equine hospital, observing the veterinarians that practiced there.

At a young age, I fell in love with animals especially horses. As I got older, and started to look at future careers, I realized that I wanted to go into an animal science career. Because I want to make a difference in the world, I decided that I wanted to be a veterinarian. Animals need us and most of them depend on us. I want to help them in a way I know veterinarians can. The career I’m interested in is being a veterinarian; I must get an Associate’s degree; I must get into North Carolina State University, the only college in North Carolina that provides a veterinarian school; I must keep my grades up to be considered at NC State University.
In one way or another, I have been taking care of animals my entire life. Growing up, I was completely dedicated to animals, caring for what could be considered a mini zoo. Naturally, as a child, I was set on a career as a veterinarian. Like most children, I was naive about the veterinary profession, but I had plenty of people to warn me about its challenges. Albeit initially discouraged from becoming a veterinarian, my search for a meaningful career not only revived my spark for veterinary medicine but also gave me the maturity and experience necessary to succeed in it.

I believe as a veterinary technician I will be faced with many challenges and heartache on a daily basis. I will be introduced to situations that can be hard to bare--seeing animals that show the typical signs and symptoms of malnourishment and abuse. Having to unfortunately euthanize or observe euthanization of an animal due to a chronic illness or financial reasons by the caregiver(s)(“owner”). I will also vaccinate and administer medications to an animal under a veterinarian’s order and supervision. I will perform alongside the veterinarian with examinations and obtain bodily fluids such as blood, urine, or feces for further diagnosis. I will be present in observing and aiding an animal in need of medical assistance. I will fortunately be there to witness an animal walking on “all fours” along the path to their successful recovery. As a veterinary technician my purpose will be to allow the patient to feel and look healthy. I would love to see the caregivers’ faces change from concerned to relieved and thankful. I realize as a veterinary technician I will have to accept the good moments along with the bad.

Like any Monday morning at Manhattan Hunter Science, I was sitting in Mr. Gershon’s classroom. My best friend on my left and a bright smart board staring back at me. Earlier that day, I woke around seven in the morning and about 7:35 I caught the train from E72nd street. I got off and took the M66 bus going crosstown I stopped like I always do on the corner of West 66 and Amsterdam to buy a bagel from Ahmed. I swiped my ID, walked up to the fifth floor, and immediately saw my friends. Days like that now seem like a figment of my imagination, but that was once my life.
The process for deciding on a product was easy. I simply thought to myself, why not volunteer so that it could go on my resume and then also can count as an grade for my capstone. My capstone product is pretty simple. I volunteer at the St.Louis County Animal Care and Control, when ever I have the free time. So far I spent 12 hours there. It will be super easy for me to get 8 more hours. I don’t do much there which sucks because i’m about to get my vet assistant certification in a few months, which means I know way more about animals then probably the other volunteers do. A typical day volunteering at the animal shelter is I park my truck, sign in, and grab my name tag (now I don’t have one since I lost it and too scared to ask for another one).

I entered the center completely unprepared for the level of education and hard work that the center demanded, but thrived knowing that I was helping heal animals in peril (many of whom were there directly because of human actions). After many hours of feeding, cage cleaning, and handling dangerous patients, I felt as though I had learned as much from the animals as I had my teachers. However, I also found myself frustrated more often than not when I found a limit to my ability to aid animals. Many animals such as monkey undergo painful suffering or even death as a result of scientific research for the sake of humans’ health.
