Personal Narrative: My First Jazz Concert

On Sunday, April 22, 2018, I experienced my first evert Jazz concert. The CSUN Jazz Faculty Concert opened up my perspective on jazz music before attending this concert I had the idea that jazz concerts were very mellow and low like the type of music people would listen to during yoga. However, the CSUN Jazz Faculty Concert showed me otherwise the concert was very hyped and upbeat like dance music even so that people in the audience got up and began to dance at certain points. Although, program pamphlets were not provided the jazz concert was very easy to follow along with and understand which is impressive considering that the first concert had two new members the day of the performance since the original two members were unable to attend on short notice. The second jazz concert was performed by CSUN undergraduate students who also continued the upbeat feeling of the first jazz group. Before the jazz group began I was rapidly drawn to all the instruments used I noticed that there were a few I did not recognize so I was excited to hear the nose those instruments created. During this movement, every instrument was present and heard including the piano. The instruments played in this section were the piano, drums, electric guitar, double bass, saxophone, conga, marimba, and trombone. This section seemed to have a tempo and a steady beat, unlike the opening piece. The segment also seemed to be more mellowed out with very few high pitches. There were forms of imitations and from the opening piece however in this section the themes were descending, but the feelings were still upbeat similar to the conclusion of dance music.
