Working alongside you and all the other staff and volunteers has been an awesome experience to say the least. The first day I showed up i was skeptical at first about how well i would be able to fit in with all of the faculty, volunteers, and students; but I was gladly surprised to find how generous and genuine everyone truly was. You all have been so helpful and i cannot express enough how grateful i am. I originally volunteered at Hadley for my English class at College of DuPage and every part of it has exceeded my expectations. Over the past couple of months I have been thinking about ways to get other people to hear about the GECRC and their volunteer tutoring program. I constantly see how short staffed we are with volunteers and

...e school, such as; Pelotonia, Light the Night for leukemia and lymphoma, Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities, etc… For many of these organizations I have volunteered more than once. Volunteering at Light the Night has a story. For my 16th Birthday party, I wanted to have my friends and I volunteer in the day while having fun at night. So I had 7 boys and girls, along with me, volunteer for Light the Night, organized by me. The party was a huge success and a lot of fun. I look forward to organizing more volunteer opportunities for my friends and I.

I volunteer at BLCI because I know the challenges and barriers that come along with being a Latina and first-generation college student. My hope is by volunteering, I can help minimize these challenges using my academic and personal experience. I have been involved with BLCI since the 6th grade. I volunteered at college panels, assisted with fundraising events; I tutored students, reviewed college applications and scholarships. During college, I was able to gain the necessary experience and resources to further serve the families at BLCI. I spearheaded and developed a yearlong community engagement project called EmPOWERing Youth. The partnership was between SDSU PowerSave Campus, a student-led energy efficiency program and BLCI, a 3rd -12th
After joining however I quickly realized the difference I could make in someone’s life by simply donating a few hours of my time. The school children I mentor 2-3 times a week are one of the greatest delights. Many of them do not receive any one on one time with another individual except for when I am tutoring them. These children have such great potential if only their parents and other adults around them would take the time to see it. It fills me with great satisfaction knowing that I am making a difference in those who one day may be leading this
The students and advisors of my Upward Bound Program, sat outside in a circle with an electric candle in our hands as we prepared our hearts for an honest and heart-to-heart conversation. Each student talked about what they had gone through and the struggles they had to face in their lives. Some students spoke about their torn families, thoughts of suicide and not feeling comfortable in their own skin.This brought out my own burden since the age of seven regarding my family where years of altercation, stress, worries, pressure could no longer be contained and my emotions came pouring out.
I remember hearing the day before about people protesting. People were talking about these protests being violent and that it had happened before. That night I went to sleep scared knowing that the next day I had school. I was hoping that school would be cancelled the next day and if they hadn't then my mom wouldn't let me go, but knowing the school system there was no way they were going to close schools and my mom would not let me stay home if the school didn't close because if I didn't attend school there was a good chance they would fail me for that year. The next day I woke up still scared, I got ready and waited for my sisters to come out, so we could walk like we usually did every day. Walking to school everything was normal, and everyone was going about their business. It seemed like nothing was going to happen and I was relieved.We walked until we reached our favorite morning food stand and I bought my sisters and I plantain chips and we continued to walk down the dusty street until it was time for me to go a different route. We said our goodbyes. I waited until I couldn't see them anymore and crossed the street into the neighborhood with the weird little white church that constantly had people screaming, I've heard many things about this church.

One year, I tagged along with my parents when they drove my brother and sister to Worldview Academy. Unfortunately, I forgot about the incident. That all changed, though, when I found myself enrolled at the same academy my siblings had previously attended. Since then, I have returned three times and this year served as my third and final “term”. After my enrollment, I concluded that I had discovered an anomaly, for I had never found myself more comfortable in a crowd of perfect strangers, nor so intrigued with academic subjects or experienced such an exhilarating time evangelizing as I had at the academy.
“Guess what I signed you up for?” “What?” I ask my mom worried. “Community service at the Boys and Girls Club!”, “You get to spend the day with little kids!” As soon as I heard these words, my heart started to race, I was filled with anxiety. How could I find any joy in this experience, I have two younger cousins and I can barely interact with them without getting flustered. I had no clue how I would be able to handle so many unfamiliar children. Should I be all no-nonsense; we do things my way? Or should I allow them to do whatever they want, within reason of course. The day had arrived for me to go to the Boys and Girls Club. As I walk through the doors of the community center, I realize two things; one, I was more nervous than I thought
I had the opportunity to interview my Sunday school teacher who has had a stroke and is disabled. Over his lifetime he has accomplished many things, including a doctorate in theology, raced airplanes and his most satisfying accomplishment, being a Grandfather.
The third step is promotion. There are so many different ways to promote, for example, flyers, local papers, social media, and blogging. Reaching out to community organizations, PTA groups, faith organizations, and libraries via written messages such as form letters or group emails is a great way to get donations or a drop-off location.
Your food pantry also needs to make sure they send out lots of letters and notifications to the local schools, so that the parents will be aware of the food pantry and know what is going on. The last thing that you can do is put flyers up in all your local stores in your community. You need to make sure that you do this so everyone will be aware of you, if they ever need some extra help. This will help all the people that may eventually need some help in their future.
