Personal Narrative: Lego Robotics

My earliest memory is creating a little garage for my hot wheels. This garage from a multitude of legos was probably greatest things I made at such an age. Later, I'd reflect on this memory, and how my creation inspired me to continue building my passion. I didn't realize at the moment, but every piece I created was slowly leading me to my passion for creating. During middle school, my interest in creating things had sparked brighter than ever. Each creation kept me rolling down the same path. As I got more advanced, each set presented new challenges. After years of watching me enthralled in building custom sets, my dad enrolled me into a Lego Robotics tournament. One magical idea kept jumping to the next. What would I build? When I entered the gigantic venue, I noticed what seemed like hundreds of people holding unique creations, from tiny, flying like creatures to destructive robot with chainsaws. As the minutes counted down to the start of the race, I became overwhelmed with fear and anxiety. Before I knew it, my name was called and my robot began to slowly wiggle down its path. Holding back tears, I ran to my failing creation. In a matter of minutes, I discovered that the chassis interfered with the sensors and I had to disassemble the car. Before I knew it, my frail yet stable robot arrived in second place! That day still inspires me because I learned to never give up. Preparing for the tournament also revealed how time is irrelevant when you're doing something that you're passionate about. At the beginning of high school, I got interested in Makezine, an online community of people who create, design, and share their interesting projects. Makezine inspired me to create, but I wanted to take it a step further and start a business. Excited about my new venture, I went to a startup event in San Francisco to help kickstart the
