Facing My Monsters Throughout high school, students face many problems and challenges that define them as who they are. Sometimes the students overcome these challenges but others it obliterates. When you overcome challenges it defines who you are and how strong you can become. To truly find out who I was, I had to overcome my anxiety. Throughout the last four years, I’ve been to 3 different high schools, because of this I was always worried about who I would know in the next class and what everyone thought of me. My first semester of my freshman year of high school I went to Lake Ridge HS, for the second semester I moved to Legacy HS. When I started at Legacy I was so nervous and my anxiety got really bad, it was to the point where I had
Like Hyrum, we will face unexpected challenges, disappointments and complications when we leave school and grow from students to responsible young adults. Some of us may experience unemployment, failure, ill health, loneliness and even death of loved one. Nevertheless, how we respond to these challenges is a matter of individual choice. Each one of us is the author of our own story, the master of our own fate and the captain of our own soul.”
It is expected that within a span of four years drastic changes can occur to any person. An example of such case is our experience throughout four years of high school or college; it is a time in which each obstacle that we surpass will become an experience that builds character. We have all left our childhood behind, but we have yet to taste the full essence of adulthood. Within these years of being cast astray to find our own paths, it is common for us students to experience regular episodes of anxiety, stress, and crippling self-doubt.
High school is meant to be the time of your life, but for most seniors just like me it can be some of the most emotional and crazy time. The things in my past make me who I am today, and the things I do now are the first footsteps into the future. I’ve learned a lot about myself in these past four years, and I still have so much learning to do. This is my high school story; the good, bad, and the ugly.
As many people have told me before, it is a very different ballgame than middle school’s easy going years. There is much more work, the classes are harder, and the environment is completely different. Many people’s grades may slip and they may cower in fear at the barrage of assignments they receive class after class. Unlike other people, I am confident in my ability to excel at all classes and to sustain exemplary grades. Therefore, while many are trembling in fear at the prodigious assignments and work is bombarding them from all angles, I will be at ease, knowing that whatever obstacle is thrown my way, I will conquer it and be its own
School, from kindergarten to college, is intended to challenge a student’s natural ability while developing practical skills and knowledge. I have always excelled as a student. In high school, I completed 10 Advanced Placement courses. I then entered college and finished my degree in 3 years while also completing multiple internships. I could have easily coasted through high school, taken my time in college, and landed an unassuming job in a cubicle. Instead, I chose to embrace the true intent of school, challenging myself to the extents of my own natural ability. I did this not because it was easy, but because it was right.
The school I had gone to for pre-k was the same school that I went to until the sixth grade, no coincidence this was the same school that my mom had worked at. Being in a very small school since I was four till the age of twelve with the same people to talk to every single year really hurt my ability to socialize with other people I didn’t know. I honestly was very nervous in moving schools, I knew I was going to be very anti-social and I was correct. Making almost no friends in middle school I was glad to move to somewhere else, because in my eyes Hamilton (my middle school) was hell. But little did I know later on being anti-social was going to have to
Along with her determination, Jamiee showed her perseverance while handling several outside-of-school problems. Personal issues arose during one of the most busiest times of the year, yet she still tried to do her best in everything she was involved in. Although there was a drastic change going on, she still managed to stay in one of the top positions of the class and be one of the best captains this school had ever seen. I sat in the same boat as Jamiee, I had many different conflicts going on at the same time. The first months of my sophomore year brought me down to my lowest point, but I didn’t let anything stand in the way of my studies. I had a sense of defeat fill me, and it was all proven wrong when I ended up top of my class at the end of the year. One of the top researchers in the study of grit has said, “Students who persevere when faced with challenges and adversity seem to have what Angela Duckworth calls, grit.” (Hochanadel and Finamore)
I’m glad to hear that you passed all of your finals with ease. It’s great that you have a 4.0 GPA. Sadly, I lost my 4.0 in the 8th grade when I took Algebra 1. After multiple Honors and AP classes, I still only have a 3.78 weighted GPA. My 2018 has been good so far, since we’re only 32 days in I try not to get my hopes up. I just recently quit my job as a waitress at Stefanina’s, so I am on the hunt for a new job. So far, the hunt isn’t going so well. I’ve only had one interview and didn’t get the job since I will be leaving for Springfield in 6 months.
“Goodbye,” broken and hesitant as I could barely get the words out. Waving back at me was Aman. A small boy who would change my life forever.
Throughout my high school education I have been faced with several challenges and rather than letting the weight and responsibility of my life crush me I endured and completed my task. When my father was gunned down over winter break my freshman year of highschool I did not let the struggle of managing my grief along with my studies stop me from passing any of my classes. When the next year my mother was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer though i did stumble I did not allow myself to be overwhelmed by the situation. I managed a precarious balance between school and home but balance them I did. When the
The third grade was an exceptionally awkward time for me, more so than even the middle school and freshman tween years. The elementary school I was attending was mostly fed by one specific kindergarten, and since my parents had me go to a private preschool, I didn’t know anyone my first day. This didn’t stop me from making friends once I got acquainted with the system, but I definitely remembered the feeling of not knowing anyone, or at least the over-dramatized version of the incident my eight year old self remembered. Fast forward to the fifth grade, when we had a new student transfer in. He had just moved to California from mainland China, and since I lived in the heavily chinese Bay Area, no one really paid any attention to the new kid
It was December. Everything in the middle school was perfect. My friends, my grades, my relationships with my parents.Someday my mom come home with the news. She said that we are moving to the USA at the end of the April.
Let’s flash back in time to before our college days. Back to then we had lunch trays filled with rubbery chicken nuggets, stale pizza, and bags of chocolate milk. A backpack stacked with Lisa Frank note books, flexi rulers, and color changing pencils. The times where we thought we wouldn’t make it out alive, but we did. Through all the trials and tribulations school helped build who I am today and shaped my future. From basic functions all the way to life-long lessons that helped shape my character.
I'm psyched to begin high school this fall! The biggest thing I'm looking forward to is the freedom I didn't have last year. It's not that big of a deal, but I'll finally get to bring my backpack to class! I'll also get to go wherever for RAISE without having to sign out of our anchored RAISE class like we did in middle school. I'm interested in joining after school clubs like partners club and participating in the school plays! I want to try to do as many activities as I can because I never did much in the last two years. This includes being on the JV field hockey team and trying out for crew! I probably wouldn't have played any sports if my friends didn't encourage me. They're the best! I hope I can make even more who are in different
Loud hallways, crowded lunches, and full classrooms. When I started high school at Spartanburg High School. It was very scary. At first it was hard trying to find my classes, but I got the hang of it the second day.My experience during my ninth grade year was fun. Some days I had an awesome day, and other days was very stormy. I have learned a lot of differences about the transition. Although I thought the transition from middle school to high school would be easy, but to me it was not easy at all. If I could warn upcoming eighth graders about life at Spartanburg High School, I would warn them about friendships and requirements, such as being on time to class and academics.
