When I read this hypothetical, I think about a “healthy Clydesdale horse” first. It is well muscle and strong. It stands 64 to 72 inches high and weighs 1,800 to 2,000 pounds. In the other hand, I am just a little girl who is about 5 feet and weighs 100 pounds. It means that he weighs 18 to 20 times as many pounds as I. He must be stronger than me very much. Although his hooves are shackled to the ground while his head is held in place with thick rope and even if I am allowed to wear steel – toe boots, I don’t think that I could kill him within 20 minutes. Approximately 12,000 foals are bread for specifically horse racing each year in England and Ireland. And normally only 50% are acceptable for racing. Horse slaughter is inhumane and cruel because the horses are normally shipped for over 24 hours in cramped, dirty trailers with no food or water (ASPCA). They are given no rest and remain standing for this entire time. When they get to the holding pens at the slaughterhouses, the pens are muddy and filled with diseases. Goals can change in ten years, however with dedication, perseverance, and adaptability, I can achieve my goals. I plan on double majoring in equine science (pre-vet option) and equitation & training, and minor in business. After completing my undergraduate work, I plan on attending vet school to focus on animal chiropractic. My education will consume a majority of the next decade, but my personal time will be spent enjoying cutting, team roping, and barrel racing. As a long range career goal, I hope to run a nationally reputable equine therapy company that includes a horse swimming facility. Furthermore, caring for horses can be a handful, but is definitely rewarding. Finally, riding horses is not just a hobby or a sport, but an action of your heart. Horses are wondrous creatures that have lived with man or thousands of years.
With two narrators experiencing different facets of island life, the reader is able to encounter a fully realized fictional world that feels physically present to them. Not only does the reader encounter a swath of characters via the two narrators’ interactions, there is a great deal of motor resonance that occurs based on the transitive movement descriptions surrounding both Puck and Sean’s experience of riding the capaill uisce, the water horses, who come out of the sea to visit the island of Thisby during October and into November when the Scorpio Races actually occur. Passages that involve their riding include sensory details of the feel of the horse moving beneath Puck or tactile descriptions of how the horse’s mane feels between Sean’s fingers as he weaves braids into the water horse’s hair in order to calm him down. The reader is able to truly latch on to the story because of these details, and even a reader who has little experience with riding horses has enough detail to imagine himself or herself in an embodied way. Stiefvater’s world building techniques are of vital importance to allowing the reader to truly experience the island as if it were a real place they could encounter in a physically present way in real life.
Horseback riding is not an activity most people think of, but it is a great escape for some people. Horseback riding is not just saddling up and riding, people have to have a passion for horses and riding. Some things to keep in mind when riding is balance and knowledge on how to keep the horse under control. People can be told how to ride, but each person will have to find a style that works for them. When riding a horse the concept of time, destination and worries do not exist.
