As I was growing up in Utah, I had a fascination of becoming a nurse that wore a white hat and helped in surgery like the characters in the hit T.V. show M*A*S*H*. I was fascinated with their abilities to help the wounded in the Korean War. I would stay up past our household’s normal bed time hour of 9 P.M. to watch the half hour episode with my mom about 2-3 times a week. Not only was the thought of becoming a nurse so appealing, but the thought of being in a foreign country during a war, helping people who were hurt, was very compelling to me. Mary T. Sarnecky, Ph.D, stated that over the three year course of the U.S.A.s involvement in the war, 1950-1953, the number of Army Nurse Corps officers involved in the action of the Korean War estimated …show more content…
Although many nurses were drafted into the war, there were others who volunteered for the experience. (Sarnecky, 2010). There are many places around the world that nurses could travel too. But if a nurse is not wanting to travel great distances to find variety, or circumstances are such with family and finances hinder such adventures, many different specialties are available locally. In the resource article from Villanova University, titled Nursing Specialties and Careers (NSAC, 2010) it lists a variety of fields that nurses could work in, many that I am already familiar with such as medical/surgical or emergency and trauma in the hospital setting. Others include hospice nursing in the home health setting and long term facilities, a.k.a, nursing homes. The ones that struck my interest in this article were the ones that involved the skills of nursing in unique settings. One of the interesting ones that this article referred to was listed as forensic nursing. It explained that the role of the nurse was to care for and treat victims of crimes and after they “attend to the immediate (medical) needs”, these nurses collect evidence to be used in the legal system and in the court rooms. The international association of forensic nurses explains it as “the practice of nursing ...when health and legal systems intersect. (IAFN, 2015) Joseph Biden, the Vice President of the United States quoted that “Forensic Nurses play an integral role in bridging the gap between law and medicine. They should be in each and every emergency room" (Hammer, 2006, forward) Clinical forensic nursing is different than forensic pathology, which focuses its investigations based on the deceased of a crime. Clinical forensic nursing focuses on the living victims of a trauma to help find justice for them in the legal system. (IAFN, 2015) “Critical time to gather evidence starts between the initial
In a particular instance a woman, Kathleen Cronan Wyosnick, wrote a very heartfelt letter to Abigail VanBuren [Abby] who was the first honorary member elected to the Korean War Veterans Association and previously a newspaper columnist. On November 11th, 1988, Wyosnick wrote to VanBuren pleading to consider a special group of men and women who fought in the Korean War, which is better known as the “forgotten war”. Wyosnick described in her letter how she was a former Air Force nurse who had lost her husband in the Korean War, and how the war is described in nothing more than a few paragraphs in text books. She said the only media reminder to the public of the war was a television show called “M*A*S*H”.

Clearly the role of women stationed in Vietnam was quite different from that of the fighting soldier. In primarily medical positions, their major duties were to heal and provide nurturing to severely wounded and/or dying combat soldiers. This function was made more complicated by the fact that the nurses, many of whom were straight out of nursing school, were only a few years older than the wounded they cared for. These nurses were looked up to and took on the role as a "big sister" with their patients, providing psychological as well as medical comfort. The nurses were expected to be emotionally strong as well as physically strong. "Somehow, it was considered a lack of competence if they felt psychologically devastated by particular events of the accumulation of experiences related to the terrible wounds and deaths with which they had to deal" (Scannell-Desch, 2). This created the post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that was a common disorder shared between the Vietnam nurses.
This is a secondary article about women nurses during the civil war. I used a table on this page for information of various jobs and positions that the women had.
At that time nursing was not yet a profession, they had caretakers in hospitals but they were untrained. As a nursing major, I find interest in the works of the sisters who aided thousands of soldiers on the brink of death, and put everything they could into helping comfort them. Those who pursue an education in nursing or are nurses have a calling, and a duty from God. The duty is to provide care and help God’s people.
At the time of the Civil War, there were only 600 trained nurses in the nation and all of them were Catholic nuns, D’Onofrio said. During the war, some 5,000 to 6,000 women came forward to serve as nurses for the North; records for the South were lost in a later fire in Richmond, he said(“Civil War helped”).
Here at the Chelsea Naval Hospital, the influx of patients arriving home from the war inflicted with "battle wounds and mustard gas burns," has created a shortage of physicians and it is becoming increasingly difficult to fight this influenza. Even our own physicians are falling ill from the disease and dying within hours of its onset. Today I received a letter from Dr. Roy, a friend and fellow physician at Camp Devens, who describes a similar situation:
...re opportunities for nurses. Today’s demand for skilled nurses significantly outweighs the supply of such professionals. In an economically challenged background, all nations are actively looking for ways to change healthcare by expanding value in the care delivery systems. For nurses, everyone’s role adds value to the patients, the communities, the countries, and the world. The development and evolution of nursing is associated with the historical influences throughout different ages. The study of the history of nursing helps understand the issues that confronted the profession. It also allows nurses to gain the appreciation they deserve for playing the role of caring for patients during wartime. The role of the profession has played an important part of history. Through the history, each nurse has efficiently established the achievements of the history of nursing.
During World War I and World War II, America called upon thousands of women to become nurses for their country to help in hospitals and overseas units. America’s calling was considered a success and by the end of World War I, 23,000 nurses served in Army and Navy cantonments and hospitals, 10,000 served overseas, and 260 either died in the line of duty or from the influenza pandemic (“Nursing Reflections”, 2000, p. 18). In the early 1930s, nurses experienced the devastation of the depression. Families were very poor and unable to feed themselves let alone pay for a nursing visit. This caused many nurses to seek work elsewhere. Nurses who were lucky to be empl...

The history of how Surgical Technologists began on the battlefields in World War II, when the Army used medics to work under the direct supervision of the surgeon, nurses were not allowed aboard combat ships at time, this led to a new profession within the military called Operating Room Technicians (ORTs). An accelerated nursing program was form only on operating room technology was set up as an on the job training of nursing assistants who worked in the surgery department, th...
Nursing has always been a key career in the health care system. Although it is not often focused on media and stories surrounding health care, nursing is a career of great importance. If any patient was asked about their experience at a hospital or a care center, many would mention the capability and care that they received from the nurses. The health care system could not function efficiently, if at all, if nurses were not present to perform their part. Nurses are more than just physicians, support staff.
I started my Nursing career in India and then I came to the United States and became an RN. I entered Nursing with the thinking that Nursing is a profession that will always allow me to have a job and all my patients will get better. However, from my experiences I understood that Nursing is more than just giving medications, and it requires clinical competence, cultural sensitivity, ethics, caring for others, and life-long learning about others and the evolving field of medicine. Florence Nightingale once said:
Nursing is one of the oldest professions. It isn’t a static occupation, as it has changed frequently over time. Its development and evolution has changed differently depending on the historical influences. As of today the nursing profession is changing and becoming larger and greater. Nursing has gone from being a career that did not require an education, to being one that is very respected and demands a high education.
Although the U. S. Army Nurse Corp was created in 1901 I believe the biggest influence it had on nursing came about during World War II (WII). During World War II there was a great shortage of nurses. Nursing had already became primarily a women’s role. Here are some aspects of nursing that the military Nursing Corps had on the field of nursing. Recruitment of not only white females but also black females to become nurses after the war began. Creation of the first in flight nurse position. There was now a need for nurses
