When leadership style in the team is analysed from the perspective of the connection to the power that the leader exerts over his followers, three main leadership styles emerge: autocratic, democratic and laissez-faire. (Barr & Dowding, 2012) In the democratic style, the leader encourages followers to interact and contribute to the decision making process; on the other hand, in an autocratic style, the leader exercises ultimate power in decision making, controlling rewards and punishments. (Barr & Dowding, 2012) Elements of democracy style: When asked about his approach to decision making and communication, Hamilton states that he tries to involve everyone he leads in the decision making process and that he is actively encouraging a bottom-up approach to communication. Hamilton also provided two specific examples in which through his clinical work, research, and his accomplishments inspired two of his staff members, whom I personally know, to follow his career trajectory. One of them returned to school to complete his master’s degree and now has been accepted to the medical school, and the other has completed his master during his urology residency, and now started a PHD program. (Hamilton, 2015) There many other examples reflecting intellectual stimulation in his field of clinical and research work that I will not have the space to discuss here, but I would like to touch upon Hamilton’s moral foundation and ethical construct. Everything he does is guided by the principle “do unto others what you would have them do to you”, applying this concept into his decisions about patients and research, and his interactions with his colleagues.
