Most people would agree that having integrity is an extremely important trait for anyone to have. People would not want to do business or possibly even associate with someone that does not have integrity. However integrity does not necessarily mean the same thing to everyone. Some traits generally attributed to a person with integrity are honesty, loyalty, and fairness. These are all very important traits, but integrity is more than just having some or all of these qualities. To have integrity, one must have a moral code and must follow that code strictly at all times. This can be because of courtroom tactics, defending those known to be guilty, or for being greedy. Law is written in a very technical format that can be very hard to be understood and it is often so specific that it does not cover every circumstance. This is why lawyers can find “loopholes” that allow acts that are considered unmoral and should be illegal, to be legal. This is considered dishonest typically because anything that does not follow what the laws’ intentions are, is considered to be morally wrong. However what is wrong is not always technically illegal. Lawyers are also considered to have little or no integrity if they defend a client that is widely agreed upon to be guilty. This is where things can get very messy. If a person openly admits guilt to his lawyer and then the lawyer defends that person’s innocence just because of the payment that they will receive for their services, that could be considered dishonest. However, defending an innocent person when no one believes in them can show a lot of integrity. Making sure a person receives a fair trial should be considered an act of a person with integrity whether they are guilty or not. While some lawyers would do this and try to make sure all relevant facts are brought to attention, others would lie under oath, hide the truth, and try to find ways to work around the law in order to make money. The word integrity is defined in the dictionary as “adhering to moral and ethical principles” or simply, “honesty.” It is having a state of mind where a person believes in doing the right thing even if no one is paying attention. These are the people who have set morals for themselves, and they stick to them no matter how tempting it may be to disobey them. It’s all about self control and making sticking to your morals a habit. Making habits starts when people are young and impressionable, such as in high school.

Integrity means to adhere to a personal moral code but that is not a guarantee with honesty. For example, if a person breaks something they were not supposed to and that person is not asked about what they did and they keep it silent that does not mean said person is lying. However, a person who personally believes in owning up to their actions and adheres to that belief tells someone that they broke an item by mistake then they are showing integrity. Basically, honesty is giving your word but integrity is keeping it. You can be honest about believing in something but if you adhere to that moral belief then you are showing integrity. Integrity; it's a word that has seemed to be lost in our country as of late. There isn't much more to be said than that. In American culture, this virtue has seemingly lost all of its sheen, as being honest and showing moral uprightness is not exactly the most attractive of actions anymore. Indeed, if one were to ask a random bystander on the street what the word integrity actually means, they probably would not be able to answer accurately. I personally find that a sad truth, as integrity is not only something that I know, however, but it is also one of my most treasured virtues. Integrity is needed, when making any decision in my opinion. In my current position in my work, not just we are required by the law to be honest and having and integrity helps a great deal to do my job a great many easier. I work on one on one setting and my clients or customers, having integrity doing the right thing is always the priority event know one’s looking. My customers always expect me to tell them the truth and give them educated advice. Of course, doing the right thing in my business sometimes can cause me to lose a customer. However, in my options I rather loss a customer than compromise my integrity. Once the customer finds out they can trust they tend to help me in my work by referring another customer.

One of the main character Rebecca Nurse had the opportunity to live, by confessing that she was a witch and by making false accusations on people, but instead she disagree and died. Integrity is a trait that is hard to find nowadays in people but that doesn’t mean it isn’t out there, you just have to look closely. Integrity is an idea that has been discussed by individuals with a verbal acuity far beyond anything I could ever hope for. With that in mind, I will not delve deeply or poetically into what integrity is or should mean. However, I will simplify the meaning of integrity; at the core, integrity boils down to doing what is right even if nobody is watching. See a piece of trash on the ground and nobody is around...pick it up. Driving down the road with no cops in sight...drive the speed limit. Arrive at a tollbooth and no attendant is working…pay the toll. An applicant is not readily available to sign a form for enlistment…track them down and ensure they sign it. I could write examples until infinity becomes paltry in comparison, yet I am sure I have made my point clearly; the greater good must be upheld regardless of who is there to ensure it is happening. It seems obvious that integrity should be a trait every individual is hardwired with from birth. However, integrity is a thankless trait; nobody is around after all. An individual cannot expect someone to clap, to smile, to thank them, to do anything actually. By definition, integrity should be something that is followed through with simply because an individual wishes to do what is correct, not because they expect accolades of any sort.

I’ve learned that going into the workforce, as manager, I would like to make sure that I practice both, integrity by being honest and by leading by example and benevolence by caring about my employees and co-workers. In conclusion, integrity is a vital part of all our lives. Without a basic human integrity, we are animals. Integrity defines how we live, and who we are. Are we good people? Is our neighborhood safe? Is our college a great place to live? When trying to answer these questions, you first look at the integrity. In life and in death, a man will always be defined by his integrity. Is this neighborhood safe for me to my family to? Is this college a good one to send my child to?
