Most people would agree that having integrity is an extremely important trait for anyone to have. People would not want to do business or possibly even associate with someone that does not have integrity. However integrity does not necessarily mean the same thing to everyone. Some traits generally attributed to a person with integrity are honesty, loyalty, and fairness. These are all very important traits, but integrity is more than just having some or all of these qualities. To have integrity, one must have a moral code and must follow that code strictly at all times. This can be because of courtroom tactics, defending those known to be guilty, or for being greedy. Law is written in a very technical format that can be very hard to be understood and it is often so specific that it does not cover every circumstance. This is why lawyers can find “loopholes” that allow acts that are considered unmoral and should be illegal, to be legal. This is considered dishonest typically because anything that does not follow what the laws’ intentions are, is considered to be morally wrong. However what is wrong is not always technically illegal. Lawyers are also considered to have little or no integrity if they defend a client that is widely agreed upon to be guilty. This is where things can get very messy. If a person openly admits guilt to his lawyer and then the lawyer defends that person’s innocence just because of the payment that they will receive for their services, that could be considered dishonest. However, defending an innocent person when no one believes in them can show a lot of integrity. Making sure a person receives a fair trial should be considered an act of a person with integrity whether they are guilty or not. While some lawyers would do this and try to make sure all relevant facts are brought to attention, others would lie under oath, hide the truth, and try to find ways to work around the law in order to make money.
