How does perseverance affect society? How does someone solve everyday challenges without perseverance? Let's say someone is faced with a challenge. Would they try to complete the challenge or give up and deal with it later? The meaning of perseverance is trying to complete a task regardless how difficult and how many obstacles can get in the way. Perseverance is trying to overcome hardships and not giving up no matter what. In the novel Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park and in the TED talk with Sam Berns both show examples of perseverance. Perseverance is important because without it our world would wouldn’t be the same. Without perseverance we might not know how to stop diseases we know how to stop today or worse. Another reason why perseverance …show more content…
Without perseverance some of these people won’t know how to deal with their problem and just give up. This are some of the reasons on why people think perseverance is so important. Salva faced difficult and sometimes deadly challenges trying to get away from war in A Long Walk to Water. After the rebels took over Salva camp and he had to lead 1,200 kids through the desert, he thought to himself, “ One step at a time..one day at a time. Just- Just this day to get through.” (pg.82). His uncle had told him to take it slow when he was younger and he was trying to get through another desert. Salva knew that the kids were confused and needed guidance. Instead of letting them to figure it out themselves he took charge knowing the different kinds of obstacles he would face. Salva then kept pushing himself, trying to lead them stately through the desert. Salva was also in plain too, with each step that he took rocks would get engraved into his …show more content…
For example, when Sam was trying out to be in a marching band he wanted to play the snare drums, but couldn’t because he has progeria he said, “Nothing was going to stop me from playing snare drums with the marching band in the halftime show.” Although Sam wanted to play the snare drums he instead got assigned to play pit percussion in the marching band because the snare drums were too heavy for him to carry. Sam knew the difficulties that he may face trying to find a way to play the snare drums. Sam didn’t let these difficulties stop him, he kept on trying to find ways to achieve his dream no matter what, and he did. In addition, when Sam is trying to keep moving forward despite the fact that he has progeria he says to himself, “ Be ok with what you ultimately can’t do because there is so much you can do.” Some people who have progeria have difficulty accepting what they can and can’t do. Sam doesn’t let the negative side of progeria overcome the positive side of progeria. It takes a lot of perseverance, self-confidence/acceptance, and determination to accept who you are. Perseverance affected temperance in the end because he found a way to be happy in life, not many people can do
When Salva was alone thousands of boys had followed Salva. Salva managed to help guide the group of boys through the desert one step at a time and try to provided them food. In chapter 13 it says, “Crowds of other boys followed him. nobody talked about it but by the end of the first day Salva had become the leader of the group of about fifteen hundred boys.”(80) This quote shows that Salva became responsible and compassionate enough to help the group of boys survive through the desert one step at a time following the steps of what his uncle said and did and not feel doubtful about his
The strength to persevere and keep going are traits that are something everyone should learn to have. No matter what you are going through if you have that mentality or mind state I feel like you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. Mattie had her mind set on avenging her fathers death and wanted to do it at any cost and she wouldn’t stop until she’s had her justice. That was her motivation, maybe something can motivate you to keep persevering through the many obstacles in your life.
Perseverance and failure cannot coexist. Failure happens when you quit. When all is said and done, perseverance, commonly referred to as "stick-to-itiveness," is the ultimate success insurance. Nothing can take its place.
“The good guy always wins” is a phrase we often hear growing up. Parents reassure their kids that the hero will win despite the trials he encounters. Joseph Campbell, who coined the term “monomyth”, identifies these trials as a part of a pattern in the hero’s journey. This pattern consists of separation, initiation, and return. Osmosis Jones goes through this pattern with only a few pieces missing. The hero in this story teaches others that giving up is not an option. One must have perseverance to complete a goal, in this case, to save Frank. The journey that Jones takes to help him get through the monomyth helps develop the theme of perseverance because he never gives up on what he wants.
Angela said that when people don’t believe failure is a permanent condition, they are able to grow and overcome, which builds grit. If you get knocked down 7 times, get up 8. This saying relates to my Mom. After my Dad died of course it hit all of our family very hard, but it was hardest for my Mom. She now has to raise two children on her own, she also lost one of her best friends and someone she had known since they were children. Her growth mindset let her learn the new ways that she didn’t know. She is facing the hardships that life throws at her head on and not backing down. That is grit and that is why she is successful in life.
He was “too small, and not strong enough yet...some of the others they will be able to manage better”(58). On page 59, the text explains, “If he were older and stronger, would he have given water to those men? Or would he, like most of the group, have kept his water for himself?” This quote shows Salva thinking about what he should’ve done, and although it was really brave of the woman to give the group of men her water, I think it was also very brave of the others not to. This quote shows Salva’s bravery and maturing identity through challenging environments. Another example of Salva’s bravery and persistence shown during the challenges he had faced was when he had asked his Uncle about his family and how they were going to find him if they were in Ethiopia. On page 59, the text states, “Uncle, if I am in Ethiopia, how will my parents ever find me? When will I be able to go back to Loun-Ariik?” This shows Salva’s persistence in trying to find his family. He had been asking himself this question for while and this was the first time he said it aloud. This shows how hope helped Salva persevere through challenging
Salva learned while walking through the desert, if you want to go the way you go, pain is sometimes in the path, you just have to push through it. “The first day in the desert felt like the longest day Salva had ever lived through. The sun was relentless and eternal: There was neither a wisp of cloud nor whiff of breeze for relief. Each minute of walking in that arid heat felt like an hour. Even breathing became an effort” (Park, 52) Salva did not give up due to the agony, but he kept trying to keep going. One day in Ethiopia, rebel soldiers had come and started shooting people and things. Salva had to cross the Gilo river. “The rain, the mad current, the bullets, the crocodiles, the welter of arms and legs, the screams, the blood… He had to get
The desert is absolutely awful, it’s scorching, there’s no water in sight, Salva has to tread through the rocky terrain barefoot, and he even loses his toenail. His late uncle, Jewiir, encourages Salva by creating destinations within the desert that Salva needed to reach. These markers aren’t very far off from Salva’s original positions, but are successive and another is made soon after Salva completes the previous one. Salva manages to cross all of these destinations and manages to persevere all the way through the
*Click* *Clack* *Clack.* The sound of controllers fills my ears. The only expression I could see on every player’s face was determination. The desire to prove themselves burned brightly. I turn to meet the box of color that displayed the game I love to play. I thought to myself, “Did I practice enough? How should I play this out? I absolutely have to win!” As these thoughts raced through my mind, I give my opponent a good luck, and press start. “3, 2, 1, Go!” Suddenly, the fictional characters displayed come to life and all of my concentration switches to this game. Determination takes control over me, and the only word I can think of is “Win.” Gaming is a passion that I have had ever since I was young. The competitiveness of it is what
The speaker is attempting to reassure the person and encourage them not to give up. Having this kind of strength is known as perseverance. Perseverance is fighting through the pain, not giving up, and not letting the struggle get the best of you. Many students show strength in this way without even realizing it. Students are under a lot of pressure to do well in school, and excel in sports or other extracurricular activities, and have a balanced social life, yet not go crazy. Several of them also face constant struggles while trying to do these things and it is hard for them, but they persevere. They stay up all night doing homework, give up pointless little things that waste their time, and do their best to stay strong. School is rough emotionally, but with the strength of perseverance and the motivation of graduation, students manage to make it through. A good friend of mine from church, Mr. Steve, recently passed away because of cancer. He was one of the best people I knew, and during his fight with cancer, he showed true strength. Mr. Steve never let it get the best of him. He was a server and could not stand the thought of not being able to help others. Even though he was slowly dying and losing strength, he still came up to the church and did his job. While his physical strength was failing, his loving attitude remained the same. Mr. Steve was a role model to me. He showed me what
Perseverance is a very powerful word, many people go through hard times and don’t make it to see the other side. My story of perserverance starts sophomore year during football season. As two-a-days started everyone was excited to get through and get to play our first football game. As the season progressed I started feeling pains in my shoulder constantly; a few weeks go by with the pain continously getting worse. I specifically remember the first incident during a game, it was against White Oak about half way through the third quarter, as I was running to go make the play, as I dove to make the tackle I landed on my side and I felt a pop, not thinking anything about it I got up. When I reached my two feet something just didn’t feel, my shoulder
My perseverance has prepared me for a career in medicine. The path towards becoming a physician can be long and challenging, necessitating the ability to endure. My ability to bounce back from setbacks and mistakes has solidified throughout my journey. One of the cornerstone experiences of my personal development occurred during high school. My determination led to me my graduating as valedictorian of my class, while balancing three varsity sports and several extracurricular activities. In addition, I worked on weekends to help support my family financially. This persistence resulted in scholarship awards that made higher education a possibility.
Failure can cause a torrent of mixed emotions and thoughts. One can begin to doubt their motives for even attempting to succeed at a certain task. Some people may choose to give up after failure, but there are a select few who rise up to the occasion and move forward to try and succeed no matter how many tries it takes. By overcoming those difficult moments in life, it gives a person a sense of accomplishment and pride and that alone is a beautiful thing.
One does not fully understand the feeling of success until witnessing failure. The success portrayed on television shows ideal success, and people feel that achieving this goal is very easy. Though the legitimate feeling of success isn’t truly accepted until one fails at achieving their goal and later work twice as hard to reach that target. I can say from my own experience that this is true when I failed to pass my permit. Even though I had practiced for weeks with my parents, it still wasn’t enough. When it came time for my second try, I practiced everyday for thirty minutes for two weeks and finally passed, I was overjoyed even though it wasn’t my driver’s license. This made me realize that failure helps you understand that you have to work even harder to obtain the success you desire, and makes you feel accomplished. Another example that presents this idea is how Martin Luther King Jr. struggled to complete his success. Dr. King was a leader in the African American Civil Rights ...
Perseverance is steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success. Correctional environments take their toll on all who pass through the
