Should the ban be lifted to allow people who are alive to sell their organs to save another person’s life? In life, there are always two sides to every story. Human organs are used for transplants throughout the world. The present legal pathway for transplants in the United States is a waiting list through donations. Based on the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) data as of as of January 24, 2018, 114,992 people required a lifesaving organ transplant and 74,708 are active waiting list candidates. As of January 23, 2018, OPTN reports only 16,464 organs were donated in 2017 with a new person being added to the national transplant list every ten minutes. Health insurance presently pays the surgeon, doctors, and hospital for legally performing surgeries for organ donations. Organs do have value and can save lives. Therefore, people should be permitted to sell their organs to a regulated market that is controlled and safe. Individuals should have the right to do what they want with their own body and make decisions without any force if it causes no harm to themselves and others. A legalized properly regulated market by the government will help stop the black market and give the seller more options and safety while increasing the number of organs available to save lives. There is no reason to assume that legalizing the selling of organs will nullify altruism. There are inconsistencies in how similar situations in the world are being addressed. At the present time in the United States, people are permitted and encouraged to donate their organs and it is considered ethical and safe but are not permitted to sell the exact same organ to somebody in need because it is considered coercion, exploitive, unsafe and repulsive.
