Peer mentor program A peer mentor is a program collaborative with the FYE (first year seminar) to provide help for the first year student. To help student overcome the challenge transition to college life, Sacramento state offer a program that would help them adjust to the new start. This program launched during 2002-2003 and the program has grown from group of 5 to 39 peer mentor to serve and help first year students. Every student who has enrolled in first year seminar classes will have an assigned peer mentor to help them with academic advising and provide one on one meeting with students to get them to know what kind of resource, program, and club sac state offers to them, and any kind of help the student wants. Peer mentors are there to offer helps to the student who need it, even the simplest question like how to use the print smart website and to make them feel more comfortable to ask questions or if the student needs help they would go to them without making a second thought because they already been in their shoes and are willing to help them. Building this kind of relationships help to establish positive first year experiences, improve morale, and foster a stronger connection to, and engagement with the campus community. Every week the peer mentor are required to go to one or both class session to talk about the upcoming event that is happening this week or any kind of opportunity that would be helpful for the student, in every event the student would find one or two of the peer mentor with the sign in sheet and if the student signed in they get extra points for the First year seminar class, even if the student went to the meeting area they would make them sign in and that also would count as extra point for the seminar class. Peer mentor want the student to go out and socialise with others and get to know different communities. and the faculties would always ask for a feedback to improve their program and provide more opportunity.( Swales,The concept of discourse community
