Patty Murray “A clean environment is essential to a high quality of life for every American.” This is a quote from Patty Murray which means that some goods, like houses, a good job, and a car can be earned, but a clean environment, clean water, fresh air, and so on are goods that can be scarce in some places and that these goods are as well essential for a good lifestyle. Patty Murray is a good influential figure because she has many goals, including for the environment to become cleaner. Murray was born in October 11, 1950 in Bothell, Washington. In 1992, she ran for United States Senate with the motivation of families that were not heard. She was re-elected as senate in 1998, 2004, and 2010. She was known for working very hard for her goals no matter what happened. She was also known for representing complex problems (such as pollution) in Americans’ daily lives. She as well had several goals like: Making better environmental laws, so that the problem would not get worse, Senator Murray knows that today the world is facing a lot of issues when it comes pollution, so she puts her best efforts to deal with this problem in a efficient way. She had several accomplishments. For example, she fought for the Clean Air Act, and the Clean Water Act so that they could not get legislative attacks. She increased federal supports to increase the time to clean the Hanford Nuclear Reservation to protect its surroundings and nearby residents. She also founded the Pacific Coastal Recovery Fund. She would mostly be alone and sit by herself being buried in books or watching cartoons. In high school she attended a program for troubled adolescents and from there she received a wide range of support from helping her get braces to helping her get information to attend community college. (59) Even with this she was already too emotionally unstable due to her family issues and felt like she couldn’t go through with her dreams to travel and even go into the art of culinary. She suffers from psychological problems such as depression and worries constantly about almost every aspect in her life from work to family to her boyfriend and just hopes that her life won’t go downhill. (60) Overall Kayla’s family structure shows how different is it now from it was in the 1950’s as divorce rates have risen and while before Kayla’s type of family structure was rare now it is becoming more common. This story helps illustrate the contributions of stress that children possess growing up in difficult homes in which they can’t put their own futures first they must, in some cases, take care of their guardian’s futures first or others around them. Her mother’s ambitions were mainly to become a famous artist and her father’s mainly included drinking as much alcohol as he could get his hands on, and in the meantime becoming a successful entrepreneur. Her father was not exactly very concerned with feeding his family properly, and he often took all the money her mother would make teaching. “I’ve got a houseful of kids and a husband who soaks up booze like a sponge… making ends meet is harder than you think (Walls 197). They often went hungry and because of her parents being so neglectful she, along with her siblings, became their own parents. She spoke of times when her family system was broken, and how looking back on her childhood, Hikel was truly an amazing father figure and role model for Alice and her siblings. Growing up in the 1930’s, Alice explained that even though times are very different now, she always had food to eat, a bed to sleep in, and any other opportunity she set her mind to. The interviewer was pleasantly set back, assuming that Alice would have had a more difficult upbringing being that she grew up so long ago. Alice felt as if she was very blessed and grateful to have grown up having those resources available to her and her family. Alice lived on a farm the first 65 years of her life.
She made sure they received equal pay and work benefits in the fields. She also made sure those pesticides were not sprayed on the workers. If it were the white worker this kind of thing would never happen or if it did everyone would be appalled. Not only did she fight for these worker's equality she also fought for women’s rights. Rocks. The second of five children, an older sister Joan, and three little brothers Terrance, John, and Jerome, all to their parents Robert W. Hileman and Katheryn Conolly Hileman. My grandfathers’ childhood was difficult, because it was part of this depression. When he was a kid his food was rationed, his family was only allowed so much of certain items sugar, meat, butter, and other certain things. When he was twelve years old, he got a job at a deli slicing meat, he did this to help his family out, this demonstrates that even at a young age he was willing to do whatever it took to help out what with he called “the cause”, or his family.
While in school, Mom didn’t have it easy. Not only did she raise a daughter and take care of a husband, she had to deal with numerous setbacks. These included such things as my father suffering a heart attack and going on to have a triple by-pass, she herself went through an emergency surgery, which sat her a semester behind, and her father also suffered a heart attack. Mom not only dealt with these setbacks, but she had the everyday task of things like cooking dinner, cleaning the house and raising a family. I don’t know how she managed it all, but somehow she did.
