Pathos is arguably the most effective rhetorical appeal for drawing on emotional reaction from the audience. From emotionally feeling a song to being motivated by a speech, pathos makes its appearance in the best of written literature. A vast advantage is given to the speaker who can take in to account a particular audience's feelings. In Mark Antony's eulogy for Caesar and Atticus Finch's defense statement for Tom Robinson, pathos is effectively used in order to influence the audience's mindset and subjective attitude towards the topic. Mark Antony used pathos in a way that influenced the audience to feel a certain way about the involved characters and the situation in general. He counterintuitively builds up the audience's sensitivity to …show more content…
Atticus Finch took in to account that the jury consisted of all white men and started off by praising Mayella . In lines 1 and 2 Finch says, “I have nothing but pity in my heart for [her]./ She is the victim of cruel poverty and ignorance”. In saying this, Atticus made the audience think he wasn't trying to blatantly attack her. If he started off by going for Mayella's throat, the jury would feel offended in a way because he's defending a black man but blaming the white woman. After easing up the tension, Atticus uses diction and a powerful scenario to create a feeling of disgust in the audience. In lines 5-7 he says, “[Mayella] has committed no crime. She has merely broken a time-honored code of our society – a code so severe that whoever breaks it is hounded from our midst as unfit to live with”. Referring to Mayella kissing Tom Robinson, Atticus emphasizes how deplorable that action is in that time period because he knows the jury consists of 100% white men. By bringing this taboo scenario up and putting the blame on Mayella, he tries to lead the white men to feel disgusted towards her. He then goes on to say that Tom Robinson was the evidence and she needed to destroy it. By saying that Mayella
Pathos is the author's use of emotions and sympathy to urge the audience to agree with his or her standpoint. And lastly, logos apply sound reasoning (logic) to attract the typical ideas of the audience and to prove the author's point of view. "Lockdown" by Evans D. Hopkins is a fine example of an author using these appeals to persuade his audience. Hopkins uses of the three appeals are easy to locate and relate to throughout the entire passage. He undoubtedly uses rhetoric to try and keep his audiences focused and to persuade them to feel the way he does about the treatment of prisoners.
The main conflict is between the blacks and the whites and for generations the blacks have been enduring continuous racial abuse from the white. 1. For instance, when Atticus gets involved in Tom 's case as the defendant lawyer, he faces a lot of criticism from his dear ones. Thomas Robinson is a negro who is accused of rape by a 19 year old white girl named Mayella Ewell. "I guess it ain 't you fault if Uncle Atticus is a nigger-lover besides, but I 'm here to tell you it certainly does mortify the rest of the family - he 's ruinin ' the family, that 's what he 's doin '" (110). Francis Hancock feels ashamed of Atticus 's actions and feels it is ruining the Finch family 's image with the agreement of other family members such as Alexandra. Atticus is a man who believes in the justice system, believes everyone is equal, and believes that faith would take a turn to help him get the negros freed. 2. During the trial period, Mr. Gilmer (the rival) shows no sense of decency towards Tom whereas, Atticus 's behavior towards Mayella was kind, he treated her with respect by addressing her as Miss. Mayella. "...The way [Mr. Gilmer] called [Tom Robinson] 'boy ' all the time an ' sneered at him an ' looked around at the jury every time he answered-" (266). Mr. Gilmer 's main argument was that there was no way any person of that descent would do work without the intentions of a reward as pay back, he kept looking back to
Owens and Sawhill use pathos to evoke the feelings of their readers. This method establishes
During the Tom Robinson Trial, Mayella is called up to the chair, asked a few questions and after she has had enough, she screams, "I got somethin ' to say an ' then I ain 't gonna say no more. That nigger yonder took advantage of me an ' if you fine fancy gentlemen don 't wanta do nothin ' about it then you 're all yellow stinkin ' cowards, stinkin ' cowards, the lot of you. Your fancy airs don 't come to nothin '—your ma 'amin ' and Miss Mayellerin ' don 't come to nothin ', Mr. Finch-" (She is scared of the town knowing that she is wrong and Tom robinson is innocent. Mayella uses this case to cover up the shame in her life because she is extremely lonely, has no self-esteem, and overwhelmed with the amount of unhappiness in her life. Mayella gets extremely defensive in this quote because she knows that everything Atticus has brung up is good evidence and she can’t hold her own. In the jury, it was full of all white men. Mayella acted timid and helpless and suggested in her comment that the man of the jury be brave and heroic. She becomes someone who is vulnerable, valuable and needs to be

Mark Antony uses personification and apostrophe to make ambition and judgment seem like they are living things. Antony used personification and apostrophe to make into Brutus a villain “O judgment, thou [art] fled to brutish beasts.” (32) and Caesar into an innocent good man “Ambition should be made of stern stuff.” (20). Antony speaks about how Caesar was not after power and that he only wanted to help the people of Rome. Antony achieves this by talking about when “I thrice presented him a kingly crown,” (24). Mark Antony was very distressed by Caesar's death, but he exaggerated his pain. Towards the end of his speech is when he truly exaggerates his pain “My heart is on the coffin there with Caesar.” and this helps the citizen to relate to
Atticus ultimately discredited the state’s evidence and raised reasonable doubt as to whether Tom raped Mayella Ewell thus preventing the state from discharging its burden of proving the offence was committed beyond a reasonable doubt. It is further clear that Tom was found to be guilty due to the jury’s racially biased and preconceived notions. Atticus’ reaction of contempt and disappointment shows that he is aware of this immoral act but he accepts the ruling nonetheless as law showing he is a
In his concluding argument, Atticus uses imagery, diction, and tone to explain Tom’s innocence. One instance in which he used imagery to better his argument was when he was explaining Mayella’s misconduct with Tom in her home. Atticus pried, “’No code mattered to her before she broke it, but it came crashing down on her afterwards’” (Lee 204). This figurative language initially puts blame on Mayella and begins to explain the severity of her kissing Tom. Although Mayella only sought out Tom for comfort and attention, no one else would see it this way. Her entire reputation, though never very respectable, would be ruined if she was caught kissing a Negro. Even though interracial relationships are quite normal today, African Americans had an entire different identity back then. They were dirty, immoral, and too
Although she doesn’t know these people personally, she automatically justifies their actions with bigotry against them. Furthermore, during the trial, Tom Robinson recounts his experience of Mayella raping him and says, “‘She reached up an’ kissed me ‘side of th’ face… She says, ‘Kiss me back, nigger. ’ I say Miss Mayella lemme outa here an’ tried to run but she got her back to the door an’ I’da had to push her. I didn’t wanta harm her, Mr. Finch… ’” (194). By saying that Mayella said, “kiss me back nigger”, Tom is illustrating how Mayella irresponsibly used her power obtained from being white. She degrades him with the word “nigger” and puts herself in a position of advantage where he would not be able to fight back, as he is a black person. Her language implies that she thinks of him as lower being than her and how she’s offended because Tom did not want to kiss her back. Tom also adds that he said, “Miss Mayella lemme out of here”, which shows that he struggled against Mayella. However, she persistently continued to force him to her will; he is not allowed to leave and is treated as if he were a dog. Even after hearing Tom’s cries for help Mayella does not stop and continues to selfishly only think about herself instead of how her actions
First, Tom, formally known as Thomas Robinson was a black man who worked for a man named Link Deas. Tom was 25 years old, had three children and a wife named Helen. When he was 11 years old Tom’s left arm was caught in a cotton gin and he lost feeling in his left arm. Tom was accused of rape by a white woman named Mayella. Everyone hated him because it didn’t look good for a black man to be accused of raping a white woman. During his trial he had a white lawyer named Atticus, who did his best to prove that Tom was innocent and Mayella and her dad Bob Ewell were lying. Atticus says,”Did you resist her advances?, Mr.Finch, I tried to ‘thout bein ugly to her. I didn’t wanta push her or nothin.” stated Tom(Lee 195). Tom did not want to kiss her but he didn’t
(877) in order to make the crowd feel complete and utter guilt for their betrayal and anger towards the conspirators who killed their beloved idol. Brutus and Antony’s use of Ethos, Logos, and Pathos throughout the novel are just examples of the everyday persuasion used around us daily, when reading the play it does look like one giant competition to see who is the most persuasive and influential character. Even in today’s economy, companies have to compete for the attention of consumers’ worldwide and politicians who argue their beliefs and views to millions of voters in order to get what they want, because the art of persuasion is just one big game. In Shakespeare’s “the tragedy of Julius Caesar,” Shakespeare uses irony to prove the point in the speech. His repetition of phrases makes the readers question if Brutus really is an honorable man. Caesar is murdered by a bunch of assassins who turned against him, trying to make the people of Rome against Caesar too, until Caesars loyal friend steps in to prove all their opinions about Caesar to be wrong. Antony tries to prove Caesar to be a great leader and a caring man using irony and repetition.
As well of a speaker Brutus was, Mark Antony delivered a more persuasive argument to win the crowd’s favor over Brutus’, in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. Mark Antony did not overestimate his audience, and spoke to the appeal of the crowd, rather than talking above it, as Brutus does in his abstract ideas and lofty speech of honor, and patriotism. Antony’s speech appeals to the basic needs and desires of the working class, using rhetorical devices such as repetition, sarcasm, emotional words, and the topics of pathos, logos, and ethos to change the crowd's’ emotions, and stance on the murder, manipulating the crowd in favor of avenging the late Caesar.
he uses pathos to make the audience feel bad about the death of caesar which makes them feel angry at brutus for killing caesar. he starts using pathos at the very beginning of his speech when he says “ i come to bury caesar” this quote just makes you feel sad mark antony just here to bury his friend. he also says towards the middle of the speech that he came to the speak about caesar “he was my friend faithful and just to me” this quote makes you feel bad for mark antony because he just lost a good friend which makes you more open to what he has to say. after reading the whole speech it's easy to see he uses pathos very effectively because at the very end you do feel bad for him. his pathos also makes him more relatable he doesn't seem like some politician trying to sway you he seems ordinary and
...rpose is to revolt the audience, so by refusing to read the testament, Antony creates the climax within his speech and lights the fire in the crowd. After building the base to his justification, Mark Antony returns to his relationship with the people and ends his speech with an unforgettable stunt that ensures a specific outcome.
