Since the days of ancient Greece, Ethos, Logos, and Pathos have been used as a way to present your argument in a strong and effective manner. Although Homer was considered the father of rhetoric and his poems are considered to have had a huge impact on modern writing styles, the Greek philosopher Aristotle was the first to divide the types of persuasion into the three known today “This dialogue-speech is fraught with thought, but also with emotion or trickery, making use of arguments and stylistic and structural effects” (Knudsen 17-18). Most people think it was Rosa Parks who started the Birmingham bus boycotts, when in reality she was just following in the footsteps of other brave women of the time including the most famous, Claudette Colvin who had already made headlines for refusing her seat far before Mrs. Parks “I paid my fair the same as this white lady paid her fair so f**k you I’m f**king sitting, have a seat” (Dunk History 0:29-0:37). In this video they use Pathos in an attempt to get you to question whether news stations are reporting on important events or are reporting on unimportant events that attract viewers in order to boost their ratings and gain more revenue. “’let us know if there are any updates on this bulls**t story from there’ ‘there’s no way there will be’” (Breaking News 1:34-1:44).
